Hi all,
Thinking of purchasing...Presonus Firebox
Studio projects C1
Sony MDR 7506
GoldWave Software

Just getting started but did not want to buy equipment that I would have to update at the first sign that I wanted to get serious with this.

Thoughts???

Thanks in advance and Happy New Year!

It all sounds fine to me with a couple of caveats:

Have you tested the microphone? Does it sound good with your voice?

Have you checked to make sure the equipment actually works with your computer?

Ah! My first post of 2007!

Thanks for the reply,
No, I have not tested anything yet.....Just researched on the web etc.

My Dell Desktop and Laptop both are compatible with the Firewire hookup and the Goldwave trial version works on both so far.

Like I said total NOOB, I just assumed that the mic had great reviews and would be okay for me to start out with. Embarrassed

I live in a VERY rural town in Upstate NY, there is not anything even remotely close to me that has these items to check out.

I dont have a large budget so I cant afford to waste what money I do have.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Everything depends on the that magical combination of mic /room / recording technology.

Some fellows don't like the C-1.
It wasn't good for Kevin G but it's a gem for me.

I think it's a dandy one to try out-- it won't break the bank. The B-1 might be better for a fellow and is less expensive, I do bleeb.

Some hardware won't work with some computer chip sets. I need to use Pro Tools so when it was time to get a laptop, the Digidesign web site was very helpful... it pointed to a Dell Inspiron 6000. The Mbox works great. The point is even though you have a firewire port that doesn't necessarily mean your computer is compatible with your recording hardware. Check VERY closely.

The Studio Projects mic is about $240 at zzounds.com (my online dealer of choice). You may want to look at the Rode NT1a which is a popular VO mic and about fifty bucks less, although I would save my lunch money for a TLM 103. Bob Sauer uses an AT 4050 (am I right?), and I use an AT 4040 here at home for auditions. Take a close look at the AudioTechnica mics as they have a wonderful cost-to-quality ratio.

I use the Firebox myself both with my studio setup and with my laptop on the road. Works great all the way around for me. Great little box.

Chris,

Well, actually it's the AT-4033 that I use, which is even less expensive that the AT-4050. And I agree that the AT mikes are a great cost to quality ratio choice. But, they are a bit more expensive than some others.

While I've not used the Rode, it seems a very popular mike and I'm pretty sure Bill Elder uses the Studio Projects B-1 and is very happy with it.

Dino, what you might want to do is check out the web sites of the various male talents on this board. Listen to the demos of all of us. Find someone whose voice is similar to your own (in terms of pitch, placement, tone, etc.) and then email or private message him with questions about his microphone, pre-amp, audio interface, and so forth. If you find more than one match, even better.

It would be prudent, I think, to do a bit more research before you spend any money to be sure; especially since you don't have any funds you can afford to waste.

I'll say this now, and it's something I'm known on many boards for reciting ad nauseum...

If you haven't tried the gear yourself, then no review in the world will help you to make a truly informed decision. I know of a VO talent who loves his C1. I personally, do not like it and went with the R0de NT-1A instead.

He preferred a Gefell mic over the U87, yet I wouldn't trade my U87 for anything and use the two Gefell mics I own sparingly at best.

Match gear to your budget and use, then play with it to determine what you actually need to purchase.

All that said, I do hope you're leaving some budget for sound treatment for whatever space you will normally be recording in.

Gold wave is good, but you might want to add the free opensource Audacity since it also does multi-track, and the price is right! just to give you some more options there are other free multi tracks like Kristal Audio Engine, Reaper (they charge as well, but there is a free version) N-track is yet another.

as for hardware: what they said... and also chime in that acoustic treatment is another gotta have. ( I prefer the rigid fiberglass to foam ( plus I covered it in tie dyed muslin, now where did I put that lava lamp?)

Thanks All for the input...I do have a space I'm prepping now in my basement.

I am now searching out places to test out the mics & equipment you guys mentioned in Syracuse, Rochester or the big drive to Buffalo. A few $ spent in gas will save me more $ in the long run on equipment returns. Good Reality check thank you !

I've been searching the board for the Demos and taking notes...Great hint!

Would I be better off with something other than GoldWave??? I think learning ONE program for me anyway is easier than adding an extra one. I have not looked yet at the other shareware yet so maybe I'm wrong...Yet again !

Dino...
I am curious, what small town in upstate NY are you from?
I would echo some here, the Audio Technica AT series mikes are not bad for the money.
Audacity is also free, and a really easy to use program to use.
Good Luck,

You guys have been very helpful. I have found out (thanks Chris) that the firebox will not work with my setup and am now going with the MBox Mini. It comes with Protools LE so I'll try that out to see how it works before I make a decision on my Editing/Recording software. Still working on the mic issue. Thanks gang!

Dino,
Glad we could help! Be patient with the Pro Tools software as it has a steep learning curve but it is worth the time and energy. Like it or not, it is the standard in the industry.

Speaking of recording software, anybody here ever use SAW? I loved it but the company suddenly went out of business and resurfaced under a new name which is when I made the switch to Pro Tools. Avid/Digidesign was much, much more stable.
