You may argue the "artistic differences," but this man changed Radio marketing forever. I was privileged (and restricted) to be a part of that change.

The "Boss" of Boss Radio Dies.

Huge careers were made off the 5-point break, aka The Drake Break: Call Letters (first), then, in any order, the time, your name, title and artist.
And it wasn't just KHJ - the entire RKO chain was into it.

I still have the 93 KHJ jingle stuck in my head. That was my station growing up. Drake's Boss Radio was the soundtrack of my puberty. Sorry to see him go.

There was nothing else like the "Drake" sound. Bill Drake was an innovator. It's really sad to hear this news.

It was interesting to see the link is to Ken Levine's blog. I worked with Ken in one of each of our earliest radio gigs at a station in San Diego. He used the air name "Beaver Cleaver" and had just about the funniest mouth in the business....one great one-liner after the other. You could certainly understand how he went on the be an extremely successful comedy writer for television.

Ah, it's a small world..... but I'd hate to paint it.

I grew up listening to Boston's 68 WRKO - a Drake format - in the late 60s and early 70s. It's what made me want to be in radio.

For those who may not have experienced the Drake format, here's a great article that explains why it was so important to radio then and should be now.

Why Bill Drake Still Matters

I went to college with his nephew, Phil Yarbrough, in Valdosta. I was doing afternoons at a station there. He said, "My uncle is in radio but I doubt you've heard of him. Bill Drake?" Then I picked myself off the floor. That was in 1972. That's when I learned Bill Drake's real name.

I am so grateful that I got in radio at the right time, and out of radio at the right time.
