Well, he did admit he was being a Grinch at the top of article -- scratch the word "article" and replace with "steaming pile of words".
A bad review from an idiot is totally meaningless. It might hurt a little bit like a paper cut, but it's not worth getting mad at the paper that cut you. Just toss/delete it.
He may have the slightest of points that it would be nice if overt fund-raising were done outside of the news, but local TV newscasts just aren't pure news anymore....they're an amalgam of what station owners think will attract viewers, a potpourri if you will of "info", entertainment, pathos, and just a bit of hard news. He probably meant to highlight his displeasure with the state of today's TV news, but stupidly picked on you while you were doing a very fine and noble thing.
Did I call him an idiot already? Yes, I did.
Idiot. There, I did it again.

No one is getting it. Courvo should be paying this guy. How else can a dying media like a newspaper column invoke "emotion" enough to arouse all this response? He is following the classic tennants of say.... Charles Dickens.
The TV station's manager and the newspaper's editors are probably thankful the public is following this so closely. And... I'll bet (or at least hope) that the charity will have its best year ever.
Here is a great example of a media personality (remember talk-radio hosts?) firing up the public.
Take notes fellow media mavens. There's lessons to be learned. _________________ Wild Willie Edwards

Dave...first, congrats for your commitment and your passion for this cause.
Everyone, regardless of profession, should find a few moments to step up to the plate and take a few swings for those who cannot.
Next, the floods of 1996 were threatening to put the City of Portland underwater. Record warm rains that February started melting the entire Cascade snowpack and floods and mudslides were destroying lives and property all over western Oregon and Washington. KGW-TV dragged every reporter they had, including sports director Steve Bartlestein (now an anchor on WCBS-TV NYC) into the field to cover the ongoing disaster. There was Bartlestein reporting live front of a moving mudslide that had destroyed a home, when suddenly the family appeared behind his shot, literally running for their lives, carrying belongings, livestock, pets, anything they could carry. Without hesitation, Bartlestein stopped being a reporter and helped them carry their saved items over a fence to relative safety. He didn't care about a reporter's objectivity...he did what any good person would have done: he helped.
What would that bag of gas columnist Bornfeld suggested Bartlestein do? To report with emotional disconnect as the family struggled to get away from the mudslide that was catching up to them--possibly engulfing them?
Bartlestein also "bounded beyond correspondent to advocate" but by doing so, he saved lives and property...which I'm sure neither he, nor the station, nor the grateful family ever expected.
One final thought, Dave. I used to be a critic. Until I realized that basically critics are just parasites on the industry. The late, great, truly gifted classical organist Virgil Fox had a few choice words for critics.
As he sat there in front a sellout crowd at the Fillmore East years ago,
Fox declared the critics sneered at him for taking Bach to the Fillmore East...that the Fillmore wasn't worthy of Bach...no matter how gifted Fox was or how brilliantly he played.
"The critics," Fox declared to the young, long haired crowd, "are the ones who talk about it...but can't do it."
And the crowd went wild.
You just keep up the good work, Dave. And screw the critics. _________________ Todd Tolces

Thanks for the support, people....esp. Mr. Banks who left a particularly dry and incendiary response to the columnist.
Thanks PB!

I seem to recall people having their undies similarly in a wad when some journalist -- I believe his name is Walter Cronkite -- had the audacity to stray from the straight reporting to offer his opinion on the futility of a conflict that was going on in Southeast Asia at the time.
Keep fighting the good fight, Dave. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Are we comparing Walter Cronkite to Steve Bornfeld?... or Walter Cronkite to Dave Courvoisier? _________________ "Bailey"

I'm not even sure if Dave himself necessarily appreciates the comparison, but for slightly stretching the bounds of journalism (according to the expectations of some outside observers) to achieve some good, in accordance with his own conscience, I believe Mr. Cronkite established the precedent for Mr. Courvoisier. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Walter Cronkite used the airwaves as a soapbox when he crossed over the line of unbiased journalism. The network did not sanction this. Why did Walter get away with it?... because he was Walter Cronkite, the most trusted newsman in America at that time.
Dave Courvoisier was working under the canopy of KLAS-TV with his project "Wednesday's Child", which is also sanctioned by KLAS-TV. _________________ "Bailey"

This struck me as a risk/reward scenario.
The risk was possibly alienate some viewers and a newspaper critic (who I am guessing very literally is fighting for his job with every column...they too are expense lines to their owners rather than valued contributors).
The reward is that children are helped and their lives might be made better.
The reward you've rightly received -(because of your efforts) on earth and maybe in heaven - is enough.
"Well done, my good and faithful servant."
PS. Anytime any writer has to start a column with a disclaimer:"Any charge this column is attacking foster children is monumentally moronic" proves the guy knows his content is lacking and his writing talents are likely not up to the task. _________________ - Peter

I have added my voice to the "comments" to this miscreant print reporter-- who is just following tradition. (see Marvin Kitman, Newsday and Howard Rosenberg, LA Times to name two)
Here's my message:
Quote: |
"Steve,
You are just WRONG, but upholding the long history of print journalists taking potshots at electronic media -- dating back to the 1920s, when radio first encroached on the exclusive domain of newspapers.
Why is it OK for newspapers to have public appeals for causes -- but not a television newscast?
TV news has evolved to more than simply a summary of the day's newsworthy events. When done properly it is a community forum that includes hard and soft material -- the serious and not so serious.
But it is also a community sentinel that can reach out to a wide and responsive audience.
Judging by your very defensive intro to this topic -- you know better.
Mr Courviosier has reason to be proud of his effort on behalf of children." |

Many have already stated how I feel about this situation so I won't repeat any of it except to say "Good for you Dave. I'm sure all of the children you have helped through out the years are very greatful." |
