Here's what V123 managed to do for me today. Get me a direct lead from a
fellow proposing an immediate job - Top 3 Market-based producer... OK, whatdd'ya got? "well, it's a few words for a website promoting an up and coming Band...." OK, I ask, web-only? " - "Hmm...well, it may be used for
broadcast...." he suggests...

OK, so the guy needs to check on that and calls back to advise that this would only be used for a couple of national cable networks..."umm...MTV2 and VH-something.."

When I try to estimate something akin to what Scale would be for a single cycle, I'm told that his media buyer had some notion, based on some V123 informational page about "average rates to expect to pay" (huh ?) which suggested national spots should be something in the realm of a few hundred bucks...

Ooookay then!

Before politely dismissing the lad, I was very tempted to ask just what pray tell they were anticipating the buy to cost for the broadcast schedule but I didn't bother pursuing it further.

In any event, I can only hope - albeit, sadly, unlikely, that no other talents they've subsequently approached - was/is foolish enough to offer to perform the job for the "proposed" rate.

Regards,

Mike

The rate lists on both of the pay-to-play sites are one of the reasons why I am no longer a subscriber.

Anyone wishing to build their career should have nothing to do with such sites.

I understand the need for a pay cheque today but ultimately it will do no good.

Why would a "Top 3 market based producer" be using Voice123 to find talent?

While I have gotten a couple of repeat clients from voices.com, it's just not worth the trouble auditioning and haggling, IMHO.

Using the pay to play sites takes "your eye off the ball".

Why Banksey? I understand a lot of the frustration from time to time about search rankings and seeking ratings, but V123 has been nothing but, well, earth-shattering, for my career. I'd be a complete nobody in this industry without having landed my most high-profile clients from them. MTV paid union scale, IKEA paid union scale, Subaru paid union scale, and the other not-so-impressive things I've landed I have made sure the rate was worth it to me before I even auditioned. If I hadn't been with V123, I can't imagine I'd even be eeking out a living at this point. I have agents out the wahzoo and I keep in touch with past clients, I market, I do the SEO thing, I'm trying to be "out there" as much as possible. But in the end, V123 with public and private leads, are the lion's share of my work and I just can't feel ashamed about it. It's a very, very rare day that I don't do at least one job from V123. Do they have skunky leads? Oh, yeah. But I don't waste my time with those and then hop on the good ones that I think I'm right for.

I've had to let my Voices.com subscription run out for a bit. I adore Stephanie and ALL she does but in my experience, Voices.com clients are often looking at more middle age voices and of that I am not an owner. V123 seems to lean more to younger sounds so it's a better fit for me. If you're not in NYC or LA, I'm not sure how else to get on-going work to support a full time talent without these sites....but to that end, I am all ears for ANY suggestions. You guys know how much I respect your opinions!

Most people who do well out of Voice Over work have no frustrations with V123, truth is that at best they have no opinion at all and at worst they merely say what I have said.

If a particular site provides enough work for a VO on a daily basis then that's all that matters. We're Pieceworkers, the more we do the more we get paid.

Just because someone is in NY, LA or Chicago doesn't automatically mean they're in the big time.

Or ... they could just be bargain hunting. Even my affluent neighbors are hitting the outlet stores more often these days.

For ME the pay to play sites offer at a minimum some good practice copy--when time allows.

I've made some small $$$ with them, but nothing compared to what my own marketing efforts bring in.

The key for me is strictly limiting the time I put into them.

I'm glad to hear that some are making lots of dough with them. For me, realistically, I'm not sure that will ever be the case.

Not knocking the PTPs, just saying that I get a lot more bang for the buck from direct marketing efforts that result in auditions where I'm competing with half a dozen other voices, and not a hundred.

IIRC, I took quite a bit of guff from folks when providing a link to this document about a year ago. I always found it amusing to know that Alex T. is helping to further lower things by providing people with a rate sheet that isn't based on anything other than their own guestimates.

I have to at least give some of the other P2P services credit. Their "expected rates" are definitely lower than they should be, but they're basing that on their own internal metrics. It's not that they've set the price lower... we did that on our own (as a group). Alex's group seems to be making it up as they go along.

You know this thread got me thinking about an idea that's passed the open spaces between my ears for about a month now.

As I am not a paid subscriber to the P2P sites - I merely have a free page which may or not anymore help my search rankings.

And that's the thing.

* Because my brand's SEO is fairly strong regardless of the P2P's

*because of the negative impact and conotations these P2P sites are having on the industry (pretty much devaluing the rates of voice talents to a level of pencils being sold on a street corner)

...I ask: is my brand (and yours) actually HARMED by even a free association with these sites?

Am I offering an unintentional but implicit endorsement of a business model I do not agree with by even being remotely associated with them?

I'm still thinking about this...don't know if anyone else is.

Your thoughts?

You might check to see how many of your most fave voice pals have a site there.

Or can you?

I don't know. I don't have a free listing anymore.

I'm still on Opuzz only because there's a fee to delete your profile.

Can I ask how you other full-timers make your money? As in what percentage of your paid work comes from where?

51 session last month resulted in a 5 figure fee income, 49 sessions from existing clients or agent, 2 from new clients, 1 of those new clients was working freelance for an existing client and heard my voice and got in touch, the other came from my website. Not sure how helpful that is for you.

Yes but to be truthful Philip also has his knitting business on the side to supplement his woeful VO business

Me...its my marketing, networking, referrals, agents and I crochet hats with naughty phrases on them.
