I have a client that has been renting a messages on hold system and wants to purchase their own equipment. This is way out of my league and I don't even know what questions to ask. Was hoping someone in VO-BB world has ideas and or recommendations.

Thanks!

Maybe Google can be your client's friend... have him do a search with "interactive voice response equipment" or "IVR". Good luck!!

I have it stuck in my head for some reason that Todd Ellis knows about this kind of stuff. Todd?

Scott,

You're correct. Todd is very involved in these kinds of systems. And I see Ed is a dealer, too. That's 2 options right here on the VO-BB. Smile

Nel Tech Labs is good, but you need software and a special modem to be able to connect to most of their boxes. If your client is looking for something simple, a CD player might be the way to go.

Premier Technologies offers a CD player http://www.premtech.com/cdl3800.html

On Hold Plus does as well http://www.onholdplus.com/products/7000series.html

Both companies also offer products that utilize flash drives or SD cards to load the message.

(if you're going the CD player route, the Premier Technologies one is a beast. Big unit, but very sturdy)

Jim is right; they have units that require proprietary software and other gizmos to interface.

They also have MP3 support on CD, Flash Drive and SD cards.

The high tech internet interfaced units are to help IOH companies protect their installed base.

i'm not sure why you'd want to go with a CD player over an mp3 (mine or any other) no moving parts, plug & play and unless they get zapped, very reliable.

ever see a CD after it's sat in a player for a year? even if it's NOT spinning 24/7.

Todd,

I agree... the OHM company I work for just replaced an On Hold Plus that's been with the client for 7 years. And it was pretty dusty. But for them it has worked out great, as it has for a few other clients.

Problem with an MP3 unit is you need to be able to get it from the PC to the unit somehow. Like most companies, the phone system is in a closet far away from anyone's PC to transfer via USB. You can transfer it via flash drive, but what if you lose the flash drive (like another of our clients has done on a few occasions).

I only mentioned the CD unit because of it's simplicity -- simplicity in message loading, simplicity in operation.

the OHP 6000 also has a SD slot for easy transfer ... pop a card out ... pop a card in. i understand what you're saying, though ... about six months ago i spent 20 minutes trying to explain to an "older gentleman" how to drag & drop a file.

My phone system has an 1/8" jack to hook up a CD player. Had the same CD in that same cheap-ass player for the last 5 years. Never been off except when the power's gone out.

So, yes, I have, and it looks the same as it did back then Wink

(that said, at this point if it fails I'll replace it with an MP3 player)
