Is anyone using the new version? Is it worth moving up from XP?
I am afraid I wont like it and the wife is really frowning on buying another HDD to install 7 and use as a second OS, however if the money were to go to buying her and Ipod touch...different story...

SO, is it worth the trouble to go with 7 and if I do, should I go with the 64 bit?

I used WIndows 7 for about 7 months with absolutely 0 issues... nice and smooth, quick... but for you, I'd wait until the final release comes out... you'll end up having to blow your system out and re-install...

Apparently there's a "XP" mode in the RC build. I'd be curious to know if anyone has any compatiblity issues.

jrkaiser is right. You'll have to do a clean install, as there's no upgrade path from XP to Windows 7. That's actually a good thing, people.

That and they are still working out some bugs in the new Release Candidate... and no doubt there will be some conflicts with some hardware. On my Netbook and my work laptop I have had no issues, I would not use it on a workstation you need to have absolute reliability on until it's a final release and has support.

DO NOT INSTALL a RELEASE CANDIDATE or FIRST GENERATION of ANY OS on a production machine, EVER. That goes for Windows or Mac OS.
That said, I hear nothing but great things about Windows 7. Slap an old drive you have laying around in your machine, install and play. I have it downloading currently through a bittorrent (don't feel like signing up with Microsoft to get it). I will run it in a Virtual Machine on my iMac, and put it on a partition of my EEE PC.

DO NOT DOWNLOAD THROUGH BIT TORRENT!

Just thought I'd yell back at you.

Jeffrey:
Thanks for yelling at me, I NEEDED IT!
Methinks this is propaganda from MS to keep you from obtaining this free, self destructing release from other sources they can't track and data mine. There is ALWAYS a danger of a BT virus, one must always be prudent when treading in those waters. However, I will cancel the DL, just to be safe, and go the Microsoft Mandated route. Hand has been adequately slapped.
This appears to a legit source of info on the infections:
