Greetings, Fellow Voice-overists...
Nothing like crashing a party and asking, "Where's the cake?" I just realized I've made several postings here without first having introduced myself. Actually, it was the lovely and talented Liz de Nesnera - someone I have the pleasure of actually knowing personally in this socio-digital age - who made that realization and suggested I correct it.
So, how do you do, already? I'm Mike Harrison. I, quite frankly, fell into VO accidentally 32 years ago when a corporate communications production house plucked me from my Production Director/Copywriter/Air Talent gig at a northern NJ radio station and made me their in-house narrator and Audio Producer. I had been convinced that radio was going to be my lifetime career, but it's a good thing I changed my mind, although I remain in radio on a part-time basis.
After a couple of years of voicing and producing audio for what had been 'klunky' slide, filmstrip (what the hell is a filmstrip?) and, eventually, video presentations, I co-founded a small ad agency geared for radio. Over the next five years I wrote, voiced and produced - for nightclubs and other music venues - hundreds of innovative spots that aired scores of times weekly on the top New York City stations during the height of the headbanger rock era. (At one point we were getting better rates than Coca-Cola on one of the stations because we were buying more airtime than they were.)
I returned to business communications in the late 80s - and was instrumental in the company's conversion to desktop computers, and then got a breath of fresh air when I moved to Austin TX in the mid 90s. After another stint there as Production Director and as News Anchor (radio), and doing freelance narrations, I came back to NJ and, five years ago, set up shop as full-time voice-overist.
And here I be. ISDN, Source-Connect, and file delivery via email, ftp and CD by postal mail or catapult (the two are comparably accurate).
My writing style can be humorous (I do try), cynical, and oftentimes opinionated, but it should never be construed as malicious. I am very committed to the hard work necessary to build and maintain a career in voice-over, and do not take kindly to those who seek to minimize that hard work. But, apart from that, I'm a real nice guy. Just ask Liz.
Now, go... and discuss. I have shpilkes in my genecktigazoink. _________________ Mike
