Ok, I know that this question has been mulled over in the past...but I'm curious. What is your union status? Please feel free to discuss factors that brought you to your decision.

I'm AFTRA/SAG.

Thank God for agents.

I'm non-union, no agent. . .and right now, not even working (in VO anyway), so I'm pretty much batting a thousand. Though, I must say that a friend of mine is forwarding me some cashola to get an equipment upgrade, so that's always nice. Other than a Neuman (did I spell that right?), what kind of semi-decent condenser mic would be good? The reason I can't get a Neuman is that he's not lending me THAT much money. I'm non-union but am SAG eligible for doing a handful of TV shows, films and commercials under contract over the years. I withdrew from AFTRA 30 years ago when I left the union market of San Diego, and I withdrew from Equity a few years ago when I decided to stop doing plays (I'm still on my honeymoon 8 years later and I can't imagine being gone nights for 7 weeks at a time).

As I've mentioned elsewhere I'm in a right-to-work state so union membership is foolish, but I can join in an instant if I move to a union market.

No union for me. Like Bruce, I am in a right-to-work state. Don't know that I would join even if I could.

See if you're in a right-to-work state here: http://www.nrtw.org/rtws.htm

And please correct me if I'm wrong but if one lives in a right-to work state (such as Utah), it CAN be to your advantage in that some ad agencies (and talent agents??) prefer non-union and those in said right-to-work states. For whatever that's worth...

We have about 100 ad agencies in the city and only 2 of them remain as union signatories. All of the signatory talent agencies here have always taken both union and non-union talent. It's the same with all the agents I have in other parts of the country.

AFTRA/SAG has an office here, but they are very weak on protecting their members so only life-long members (most of whom came from elsewhere) seem to retain their membership.

non-union (or what I like to call pre-union). i'm in NYC and making a living form NU work - although more and more I'm being sent out on union auditions (primarily AFTRA) so the decision to join may be sooner than later, but not rushing into it.

Although this morning I get a call from one of my brothers (my brothers -three of them - are always on the lookout for my voice) saying that a spot I did last year for a campaign, is being run again... as NU that sucks, because I was already paid for it when it first ran in early to mid 2005 - and now that it's running all the time again now, I get nothing but the satisfaction of saying "yeah, that was me."
