I've been working on a feature article for my blog featuring performers of vocal sound effects, and a name came across the wire today via an interview that I wasn't previously familiar with: Charlie Williams, aka "The Noise Guy."

So I gave him a plug on the blog:

http://voiceactors.wordpress.com/2010/01/16/charlie-williams-noise-guy/

And it gave me the opportunity to ask my readers for assistance in identifying a voice from my past -- someone I must include in my article because his recording is the oldest I've heard. I feel he was a pioneer in vocal SFX and without knowing who he is my article will be incomplete.

Here's an excerpt from my blog about what I recall of the performer:

Quote:
When I was a kid (back in the late 70s), my grandparents had a vinyl record that might have been from the 50s or 60s that featured live and studio-recorded performances by a Grand Master of vocal sound effects. The live portions resembled a sort of stand-up comedy performance, and he performed using a bullhorn (which I recall he said he kept in his car to pull pranks on other drivers and pedestrians).

He also performed live the most complex vocal sound effect I’ve ever heard: a train going from start to stop, and even moving between cars in the middle.

It was simply one of the most astounding things I’ve ever heard and I’ve spent a lifetime trying to replicate the performance.

I think the album cover for the record might have been red in color, and I do recall there were photos of the guy performing on the back.

Surely one of our members here heard this same recording I remember hearing 30 years ago and can help me to ID this voice, so any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Would it be Victor Borge by any chance?

Holy crap! That's the guy! Thank you so much, Lee!

Now to track down those recordings.

I had no idea he'd still be alive too. I'll see if I can get an interview with him for my article.

And thank you as well, Lizden. I should definitely mention Borge in my article.
