I bought Source Connect specifically to do my demo with Nancy Wolfson. I figured that once I factored in what renting an outside studio would cost, I wasn't spending all that much more. (Like with common gearitis, I convinced myself that this was an "investment!")

If SC were not a life-time license - which will probably e the death of them - I wouldn't have bought it. I have it - I've used it to patch a local guy into Lala-Land for a session with Nancy. I've also tested it more than I have ever used it. I'm re-installing my mac stuff right now and SC is part of that re-install. I'll test SC again and then let it sit there in the wall, waiting for the next highwayman.
I figured I would be an early adopter of a technology that may never take off. But if for some stupid reason it does - I'll be happy I bought it early.
They've gotten a lot of bad press - a lot of it undeserved. If you're trying to patch the London Philharmonic through it your going to run into drop outs, but for VO is has been rock solid. No problems, no complaints.
There are a lot of people doing there best to crap on it. It's not bad stuff - it's just not being embraced as much as it needs to be. I don't get any warm fuzzies from other users. Graue's studio had a scheduled session here and my ISDN took a dirt-nap at the last minute. When I offered up SC they politely declined. I think it's a trust thing between an almost rock solid technology (ISDN) and one that has had a few big, embarrassing hiccups along the way that have made people frown on it.
I have my own suspicions that studios with large investments in ISDN have their reasons for poo-pooing it in the public forum. I also don't see SC reaching out to do any damage control...
I guess that makes me an infrequent, but generally happy user. _________________ "I would rather bask in the warmth of leading others to success than wander the world aimlessly telling others of my own." |

Michael, are you saying there are no dropouts during a VO session? I have tested it but never actually used SC in a session.
Based on what I had heard about the dropouts, I had considered installing a physical ethernet line into my office, in place of the wireless connection, as I was told the wireless connections were more dropout-prone.
I am pulling for Source Connect. I like the technology and affordability. |

During a 2 hour connection to an LA studio - in which one of those hours was used waiting for a certain high-priestess of voice over coaching and demo production to arrive at the studio, costing the guy who rented time from me an additional $105 dollars - there were no drop-outs. Every other time I've had it hooked up I haven't had any issues.
I use hard-wire in my studio. Why I felt the need to share the other little anecdote I'm not particularly sure, but it has always chapped my chunky-monkey. _________________ "I would rather bask in the warmth of leading others to success than wander the world aimlessly telling others of my own." |

'Just finished my session with the lovely Ms. Wolfson a coupla weeks ago. Used my S-C without a glitch for a solid 2 hours to LA.
I offered the studio engineer the use of my ISDN instead, and was quietly ignored. Apparently S-C is his first choice.
BTW, Nancy was right there in the LA studio, no phone patch needed...only the S-C with built-in talkback.
BTW #2, I don't use Pro-Tools with my S-C...just the Source-Elements desktop. 'Works fabby...I do have to boot up to XP, 'cause S-C doesn't work on Vista or Win7... and Pro-Tools gives me indigestion.

I just had an SC inquiry from a studio I do business with occationally. I believe there's some other board members from here on his roster as well.
He feels that SC will definately gain in popularity as time goes by.
Hmmm. The low price ends today...and I've got a NW demo session in my future.
(later that same day....) I drank the Kool-aide. SC installs easily....iLok is a pita though.
If anyone wants to hook up to test give me a call. 860-535-0604.

Hi Guys,
been a while since I posted on the VO-BB, I've been hangin' over at Julie's place, but I guess someone left the windows open or something... place's gotten a little "cold" these days. So I think I'm gonna hang around here for a while - that okay?
Saw the poll... and I miss the option: "Just got it... haven't used it - yet".
I'm one of possibly many who took the "get it before February 1st-bate", hoping that Source Connect will prevail in time. As A Danish talent, doing quite a lot of stuff from foreign clients, I've had a few inquiries about it, and a few about ISDN, too, which Source Connect can do via bridging services.
I guess time will tell if the investment will prove wise.
I'd also be interested in learning just how many of you decided to take the plunge. _________________ Regards,

I'm having issues hearing myself and the director at the same time- I can get one or the other (obviously the director wins leaving me in a giant silent vacuum on my end...but they can hear me). It's an issue with the way I'm setting up the sessions I think- and I haven't taken enough time yet to figure it out.
I figure it's good to have every option for a client- so I'm glad I got it! It's certainly cheaper than ISDN even if they do charge $10/mo eventually. However, I still prefer ISDN. I like things that are tangible- things with buttons and knobs and flashy lights. |
I can help you with this, Kara, no problem.
$10/month is only for a support contract, NOT for use! _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

Howard is a wonderful man, and my first voice-over studio client.
I still work with him when he has tech support needs.
You can hear his voice on my little "promo" sampler on the first page of my website... _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

George, I was talking with HP this week about Source Connect. He didn't realize that's there's a version that can operate w/o protools. Now that you have him on Logic he might be a candidate for SC. _________________ Wicked huge.....in India.

Chuck, Howard's excited about it, so much that he is having me build a new VO2GO kit for him. He already owns an SC Pro license, so he can use the fantastic Source Connect Pro 3.5, which is a stand-alone a . No need to fiddle with Logic at all. Thanks to the recommendation of one of our vo-bb'rs, I am outfitting his kit with a Safe Sound Audio P1 preamp. It seems like the best compromise between the portability of a MicPort Pro and sound and functions of his usual preamp of choice, the Focusrite Red 7. Audio interface will be the Echo Audiofire2 for it's extremely compact size and excellent A/D converter. Rounding it out for phone patch duties, a JK Audio Daptor 3 bluetooth adapter. It's gonna be sweet!
Oh, I know I am going way OT here, feel free to move this to the Gear section. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.
