Is anybody using an RE-27 a lot? I know many of you use the RE-20, but haven't seen much mention of the 27.
This is just random curiosity, as I was listening to a shootout yesterday and was thinking the usual "good...nice...better..blah..." about most of the mics, but when the RE27 sample played, I sat up and instantly had a brief "I gotta get me one" moments. I won't be getting one, as I think I have my LDD bases covered, but now I'm wondering if its just me who likes them, especially as I saw the post where Deidre was selling hers because she prefers the RE-20.
Any opinions on these?

ps; try keep positive opinions to a minimum....my "won't be getting one" is easily over-ridden by "I gotta get me one". Ninja

The RE-27 is the better of the two by far.

I've always have said this, and always will.

I have both and love love love the RE20 best. The RE 27 just doesn't sound like me. And it still needs hella preamping to sound like anything at all.

Okay, so your choice was more of a transparency thing.

From what I've heard, I'd agree.

I forgot to mention, it had the same effect from 2 different shoot-outs. From the mics covered--which was most of the standard VO mics--there were only 3 that really stood out; the 27, the Lawson 47 and an SM-81. I suspect the SM-81 is due to it being the only SDC among the LDC's and LDD's.

RE20 and 27 are very similar. RE27 has a high end boost that can be rolled off.
I'm in my tenth year of talking into an RE27 daily from 3-7pm at a large market radio station.
RE20 is slightly more mellow.
Rush Limbaugh uses an RE27. A right handed model.
I prefer a condenser mic for pro voice-over work. A 416 is my weapon.

A common "complaint" I've heard about the RE-27 is that it sounds brighter than the RE-20. It does have a different magnet in the element, and that certainly will make a difference. I don't look at that as a problem. Just another color in the crayon box.

Love the RE-20, you can really "work" the mic. I also have an affection for the Shure SM7B--but the killer for me is the U87 thru the tube pre-amp of your choice, especially narration.

Sure, the SM7B has become my goto for female VO.
Many people seem to love the RE20 due to its lack of proximity effect, but I see this as less tonal options.

Rush Uses an RE 20...A gold plated one, but an RE 20, not the 27

Dear me.

I was thinking of this recent interview with William Shatner.

So DB....

Do we have a Rush Crush here....... Smile

If so, no shame...I actually find Ann Coulter quite hot(though caustic) at times, as well as

During the '91 Iraq war, I had an incredible crush on Christiane Amanpour

Although, I don't think I've ever seen her use an RE20, or an RE27. (Must keep the the thread on topic.)
