I had a couple of diaper songs, too.
It's impossible to NOT sing to your baby. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

No problem at all Whitney. I hope my ramblings helped some. I tend to go off on tangents and always hope my thoughts come out properly when put into written form.
As for the compression, think of it as a tiny guy taking your audio and crunching it down so that the quiet levels and the louder parts are closer to the same. And usually when compression is added, increased volume can be added because the louder parts are now tamed down more by the compression.
It is used to make a track stand out in a mix so that your voice or whatever is heard better. Because in reality, that music track you are using on the demo, more than likely, has been compressed and mastered somewhat....so to make your voice pop out more, the compression helps bring your voice out and sit in the mix better. Or as some would say, put you on top of the mix more. EQ also helps in that process in that rolling off a little bit of bass on the voice so as not to get lost in the mix and adding something between the areas of 1k to 5k to brighten the voice if needed. If you couldn't or didn't use compression or EQ on your voice, the volume level of the music would have to be a lot lower so people could hear every word you say. But compression should be used sparingly so as not to sound "squashed" or smashed. Good compression is not something a novice or untrained ear should ever be able hear. And for the matter, the trained ear as well. But those that know compression, know when it is being used.
With the compression issue that I mentioned, it seemed that the compression on those two spots/segments was a bit too much, which gave it a harder edge. EQ with too much compression added can be slightly ear piecing at times. I would just back down the compression on those two a little.
And as for your adult voice....the "you" voice, I think it was definitely the "celebrate the joys of parenting thing". I didn't think that sounded like a 12 year old at all. And I really liked the sound. I would say that is or could be your "money" voice. From promo to commercial to narration. That one would span the styles and work really well. Don't abandon everything else because the other stuff earns you money....just don't be afraid of starting at "you" when someone wants a read. Because you sound really good. _________________ Ben
