What would it look like?
See me and my pal Amy were chatting in another thread about how we're not too keen on the VOICE 2010 logo.
I got to thinking, after I slammed it, how would I do it differently? I'm a "don't point out a problem without offering a solution" kinda guy.
At the left you see a quick logo idea I had (cause I still am no good at loading pictures into threads here)
But we are SO creative here I thought we could stretch our creative juices and have a logo contest.
Any takers for the fun? mine took about 20 minutes (maybe 30) and no doubt, looks it! _________________ - Peter

I can't speak for anyone else, but I think voice-over-related logos featuring microphones - especially those older than 20 years - don't do anyone a service. Casting agents moved away from the old 'announcer' style years and years ago in favor of one's own unique sound. I think promotional artwork should reflect that trend. I mean, we're promoting to others in the same industry. I think they'll get it without seeing a mic.
Them there's my two cents. _________________ Mike

Nope Mike, not looking for critiques....looking for ideas, examples.
Don't like mine? Cool...draw your own. Let's have some fun.

I would hire a professional artist who has logo-design experience. _________________ the Amy Snively family of brands for all your branded thing needs.

I'd make the O in voice a silver globe with "2010" in it, and lose the mics. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

In art school, we learned that there are certain specific qualities that make a strong, iconic logo. That's always stuck with me. The most important of the qualities, in my opinion, is that the logo should be strong, unique, and recognizable in black and white. Think of all of the most effective logos you see all the time. Simple. Bold. Instantly recognizable, even if just in silhouette.
I bought a hat from Voiceover Extra before I even knew what Voiceover Extra was because I liked how cool the clean logo looked on it.
I tried to find these principles online, and this is the closest I could find in a hurry:
From: http://www.davidairey.com/what-makes-a-good-logo/
Quote: | Iconic logos are:
1.Describable
2.Memorable
3.Effective without colour
4.Scalable i.e. work when just an inch in size
5.Relevant to the industry in question |

(It's a really cool hat!)
For the record, my lame entry in this contest was to be an open mouth with an audio wave form in it. It looked more suitable to an orthodontic convention.

Thanks.
Guess what the waveform says? The grid below was inspired by faders on a console.
Amy makes excellent points: the logo should work without color, and it should be readable when scaled small. But, alas, I only have a background in typography, not art or design. And that brings us back to Amy's original suggestion: hire someone who has logo design experience. But, if we wait about 20 minutes or so, there's bound to be someone who will begin holding logo design bootcamps.
Gee... look at the time. _________________ Mike
