So... I'm contemplating building a new PC for my Pro Tools setup and I've been digging through the digidesign DUC and looking at all of the various gear head posts regarding "the ultimate PC" for pro tools and mbox, but holy cow is it ever overhelming!

On that note, I pose the following question:

If you were going to build or have built a new Windows based PC (let's not get started on PC versus Mac... Foot in Mouth

), what would you use as far as motherboard, cpu and hard drives go? Obviously $$$ is a consideration, but you do get what you pay for when it comes to computer gear.

I'm really interested to see what you all think!

Brian, if I were going to build a new PC, and hopefully I will later in the year, I would go with AMD processors, Western Digital hard drives, Asus mobo's or a comparable brand name, Tyan, Shuttle, etc., Corsair RAM and a nice piano black quiet case from Antec, with Antec pwr supply. That is what I'm looking at later this year.

My current system is AMD based on a Shuttle mobo with Maxtor drives, Corsair RAM (1 gig) and a Sony optical drive (DVD-R/RW CD-R/RW). Most all the components came from Tiger Direct with the exception of a few pieces.

I'll back up Allen on this one...good choice of component brands. It's pretty easy to build a PT compatable PC...do read the compatability doc's on Digi's site carefully! The wrong mobo shipset will have you pulling your hair out.
Don't go for the bargan memory either...buy the best you can get. Going dual channel/1-gig will work wonders too. I'll second Allens recommendation on AMD proc's too..get good cooling though..they run a bit hot.

I've been on my home built AMD 64 rig for over a year now...the machine runs fast and with more stability an any Mac/PT set-up I've ever used.

In addition to Tiger Direct, don't forget to check out newegg.com. I've always found their prices to be among the best, easy to navigate the site and lots to choose from. Plus they're very quick to ship.

I, too, want to build a new computer, Windows PC, with Adobe Audition. I'll take your advice exactly if it doesn't mattter that I'm not using ProTools and digidesign stuff... My computer is s-l--o--w--i--n--g......down.....Must....have....RAM

Go for it Bettie. Remember, use the best quality RAM you can get. I recommend Corsair.

If you've never built your own PC before you'll find lots of help on line. Google it. There's tons of magazine articles on PC building as well.
