Hi folks!
Recently, I did a VO demo with a local recording studio and was very encouraged with how it went. Unfortunately for me, the optimism went bye-bye when when I got an e-mail from the studio saying I wouldn't be included on the talent roster.
And so, after years of trying to land radio & VO work, I'm throwing in the towel & beginning a media relations business. Life is too short to chase dreams that are never meant to come true.
Thanks for critiquing my stuff over the years.
See ya around,
Tom |

When I was training in investment management the first thing we were taught was to set a "stop loss" and stick to it. If you buy a share for $1.50 you may set a stop loss at $1.30, that is the price at which you sell, no matter what the circumstances. Note that we were never taught to set a limit at how much we made only to limit our losses.
Congratulations Tom. You gave it your best and now you've decided you have lost enough time chasing the radio/vo dream. Good luck and every success in your future endeavours. |

Lee,
I was encouraged by how well the demo went, 3 spots in 20 minutes. The producer thought it sounded real good. The person in charge of talent said I needed to improve my diction, character range & versatility. Asked Deirdre her thoughts, said I needed to re-learn how to speak because she could hear my tongue.
Yes, I had a mild case of Cerebral Palsy as a child, but have been doing announcing work for 20+ years. But trying to use the announcing work as a springboard to radio work was disastrous...the springboard broke as I was fond of saying.
Went to broadcasting school in '07, that went south because I would never have qualified for a loan (tuition was 9K for a 9-month course). In 08, I interviewed for a weekend news job. Lost out because I didn't have news experience (then why the hell did you interview me?!). Turns out the guy they hired was all of 22! Then I get an e-mail from the news director 2 days after saying why don't I try sports? That's when I said to hell with radio.
Went back to VO with the hopes of incorporating it into my business. No luck, so that's that! |

I don't think you should ever regret pursuing something, even if it doesn't work out the way you wanted it to. You never want to be that old guy who wonders "what if?"
Good luck to you in your life's next adventure! _________________ the Amy Snively family of brands for all your branded thing needs.

Tom
I could almost agree with Amy... But there was this one girl in high school that I really really really thought I wanted to marry.
After graduation... meh. We parted our ways.
25 years later we meet at a class reunion. That answered the "what if" question.
(No... I was already HAPPILY married.)
What's my story got to do with VO... probably nothing.
If you need to step away from the microphone... do it as your choice.
Media Relations just may be the girl you're really looking for. _________________ "Bailey"

Amy,
I don't regret it for a minute. Ever since I was 6, I wanted to work in radio. But when you're hitting 40, it isn't a terrific time to start a career in that field. Especially when radio stations want young kids fresh out of broadcasting school who are greener than July corn get jobs right outta school while I in my heart of hearts know I can do a better job than these kids...if I got the chance. |

Lee,
This was the 2nd time I recorded at that particular studio. The 1st time I was rejected by a different person in charge of booking talent, mainly because I was living out-of-town. |

Tom,
One of my regrets was missing the opportunity to meet you when I was in Winnipeg on a business trip in 2006. It takes real courage to see things as clearly as you have. My very best to you as you move forward. _________________ Be well,
