I'm making some video podcasts using a Logitech Pro 9000 webcam. I'm not satisfied with the audio quality, so I got a cheap ATR6550 (same as the ATR55) small shotgun mic. (This is not using my regular VO setup, by the way.) I'm pulling my hair out trying to get a decent level from this mic.

This mic uses a 3.5mm connector, which inputs into an M-Audio Revolution 5.1 sound card. It is battery-powered, and I have tried replacing the battery with a fresh one - no difference. I have all the levels set to max in the M-Audio control panel and the Windows audio panel, I've fooled around with the settings in the webcam to see if that helped, I unsuccessfully tried updating the driver numerous times - no dice. I'm using XP SP3, and the audio software I'm using is the studio version of Sound Forge.

When I tried updating the driver, the release notes said something about fixing an AISO issue, and since I could not successfully install the latest driver, I'm wondering if that is what my problem is. If so, unless I figure out a way to update my driver, I may have to replace the sound card.

...or, can anyone suggest a video forum where I might ask this question? THANK YOU!!!

Looking at user comments at NewEgg, I see many complaints about the mic inputs not working. But when I used this same mic on my little Acer netbook, I still had very low sound levels. I'll play around with the netbook some more - if I can get this mic to work on my netbook (on-board sound card, XP SP3), then that points to my M-Audio sound card as the culprit.

If that is the case, I will be in the market for a cheap but good-sounding sound card - consumer-level quality, two channels is all I need. I've had issues with Audigy sound cards, so I don't know where else I'd turn to.

Well, gearslut that I am, I purchased an Asus Xonar DS sound card and an Azden SMX-10 mic, which should do the trick.
