In sending queries to various agencies, I've received a few responses along the lines of "We are presently not accepting new talent from out of town...it is not practical for us to add new talent with whom we have not spent much 'face' time."
Is this pretty much par for the course? I know that several VO talents and actors have agents in different cities, of course I assume this usually happens only after getting a local agent in one market.
So...start local, then expand? Thoughts and advice welcome. _________________ Great Voice. Great Choice. For Voice Talking and stuff.

It just depends on the agency.
Really.
I've never met my key VO agent. We do everything over the phone and by e-mail. My sessions are ISDN.
I also know there is stuff I can audition for here at Camp Cooper-- but if I landed the gig, I'd have to fly to LA for the session.
It's a crapshoot, I think. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

DB's right, it is a crapshoot! Sometimes it's clearly listed on their website (talent w/i 100 miles only, etc).
My policy over the past few months is one of carpetbombing the entire country.
The worst they can do is say no. And believe me... they do. |

Dave, I'm not represented yet, as I've not done any "carpetbombing" myself but....if Texas is a right-to-work state and you're not union, you may have good luck targeting agencies that like to work with those in right-to-work states, nonunion...

I'm also seeing a fair amount of "Be local, or have your own ISDN, or begone" policies. Understandable. Keeping at it. _________________ Great Voice. Great Choice. For Voice Talking and stuff.

Kwel! Now you can toss around the phrase...

Thanks. I know, if a schmuck like me can get repped, then there's hope for you all... _________________ Great Voice. Great Choice. For Voice Talking and stuff.

Dear Newly Represented:
Congratulations! Is your lucky agent in town...or out?

Wouldn't you know it...it's on the west coast.
Also, it came about from a mere query letter. They were apparently more than happy to listen to my demos online; they followed up with an email, I called back, ten minutes into the call I was offered a slot.
I will temper my enthusiasm shortly, but you'll excuse me if I have a spring in my step at the moment... _________________ Great Voice. Great Choice. For Voice Talking and stuff.

Great news David.
Now, let's make this interesting.
What's the under/over bet on when the agent will provide you with your first solid lead? Or shall we'll simply pick a date.
Might as well make the waiting fun! _________________ - Peter

Peter,
They beat you to it. Took them eactly 6.5 hours to shoot me my first lead (a national TV promo).
May not get it, but I'm glad to have the chance...especially so quickly. _________________ Great Voice. Great Choice. For Voice Talking and stuff.
