Yes- and having been a consumer of many coffee pots over the years it's much easier to glance at one on the shelves and see that it's just like a coffee pot I've seen before - except someone has put a gold handle on it and raised the price.
The gold handle may look nice, but it doesn't offer any additional functionality when compared to the plastic one. In both cases, when you drop the pot - you're still only left with a handle. _________________ "I would rather bask in the warmth of leading others to success than wander the world aimlessly telling others of my own." |

I for one plan to ignore the sordid bashing, and enjoy the dashing.
Thank you Philip for the early morning tour through the Eastend.

I have a particular fondess for Zoe because she gave me a hug and a kiss then bought me a drink for lending her my coat. |

Hey - If I offended it was certainly not my intention.
In my limited experience in this here rodeo I've noticed a trend: There are a goodly plenty of people who are more than happy to sell you a book for 19.95 about how to make millions talking into a magic stick in a darkened room for 20 minutes a day.
And according to those authors, that's all you have to do. "Do you have a good voice? Have people commented on a what a smooth voice you have when you answer the phone? The YOU TOO can be a millionaire just like a bunch of VO folk that you've never heard of because you aren't in VO - YET. But if you want to join the illustrious group of people who make scads of cash just for talking then buy this book and we'll tell you how."
So, you shell out the 20 bucks for the book, only to find that the very last chapter says, "it's really harder than we've made it out to be: The competition is fierce - but friendly - and the rejection level makes the worst widget salesman fell good about himself. But that's okay; if you have difficulties making it in the actual business, the best thing that you can do is write a book. That way you just have to post your wares one time and make money on a daily basis. If that doesn't work, just hang out a shingle saying you're a coach, charge ungodly amounts - and oh yeah, if you really want to say you're the best, only work with working clientele."
I'm sorry but every career path has their share of snake oil salesmen. In most industries they are called consultants. That is not to say that all consultants are snake oil salesmen - some are actually eminently qualified, but the talentless hack far outnumber them and bring down the entire industry. In the VO business, they aren't called consultants, they are called coaches, and again, while there are many many good ones, there are enough complete loons to make the area very very muddy.
I would never presume to disrespect anyone who has been helped by a coach, and who has improved their craft with them. But I also know that there are plenty of people in other industry who are imminently talented who actually believe that Anthony Robbins helped them (but he really didn't; they were/are already awesome). To say that you were last voice coach of Brando is tantamount to saying that you were the last person to have a conversation with the Thomas Edison before he submitted his patent for the lightbulb, and therefore you are the one responsible for helping him get his patent.
If you personally enjoy the work of Marice, then congratulations. I hope that I didn't offend. I certainly didn't intend to. Please accept my apologies. She just set off a huge amount of personal charlatan alarms from that podcast, and I just posted my reaction to the interview. Maybe she was having a bad day, but frankly I found the cast condescending and rife with cliche after cliche. Not my cuppa tea. Just my opinion. If you think that having a less than "rah rah go team" opinion makes me bitter, sorry. But not buying everything that everyone sells in this or any bidnizz isn't bitter. I think it's fairly healthy - especially to my pocketbook. _________________ Jody Silvers

Mr Banks - I must applaud your chivalry on the coat lending, but seeing that jaw-dropping outfit, I'm forced to ask: Why would even think about covering up such a get-up?
Whatsamattawitchu, man (erm, sir?)?
Methinks you have the same soft spot for blonde blue-eyed beauties as I have for smokey-eyed brunettes. _________________ Jody Silvers

Zoe left the function about 8 times during the course of the evening for a "smoke break". By around 8pm cars outside were showing evidence of frost so my coat or at least "a coat" was essential.
For the first "smoke break" I offered and for subsequent breaks she just helped herself. Be honest, that dress was not designed for temperatures around -6 degrees C. |

True. Some collect the money but don't actually deliver any oil. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

In all honesty that dress was not designed to be worn outside of a dressing room. But I am not complaining in the least bit. I'm glad she chose to throw caution to the wind - and apparently other parts to the biting cold.... _________________ Jody Silvers

Now I want a cigarette.
Lookie here guys and gals—
Nearly everyone in the known VO world reads this forum or finds out about it in other discussion groups or email, so the things you say about people—of whatever stature— WILL REACH THEM.
I am just, as it were, sayin'.
And no, I didn't listen to the podcast. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

Joe---I don't get it either. I just enjoy the content from the guests he's had on, their insights into the future of the VO imaging biz, their gear chains, how they got their starts, what their workday is like, etc., etc. Pretty cool stuff. Who the hell cares that the intro is overblown? I just skip to the heart of the conversation and go from there. |

Very important point! If people rely on Social Media to get their names out there they must be mindful of the fact that this is the INTERNET and not the FLUFFYNET, this is business NOT a cocktail party and freedom of speech means the freedom to express thoughts as to why you DO NOT like something.
In the context of writing things on the VO-BB, should Deirdre decide that I am to be named Emille of Caen then that is the end of the matter. Any freedom of expression or editorial flexibility is granted as a courtesy; needless to say the real world doesn't work like that.
Bob kindly posts a Youbook clip on his blog - "My great fiend and mental Philip Banks has just voiced this international TV campaign for BMW". Hoorah thinks the fatbloke more PR and SEO for me! After a few days the comments on Bob's blog and around the interweb are flying fast and furious, the consensus ...."Philip Banks sucks, this is why the voice over industry is going down the pan...Please someone put him out of my misery!"
Bob's fault, fault of fellow VOs or coaches? NO!!! If you turn up at a party expecting to get some attention don't complain if it's the wrong kind of attention. |
