Yes, this is beautiful, he's such an amazing orator. The trouble is, he doesn't get enough exposure these days! Wink

I couldn't agree more. And, as for those hoping to become writers:

Literary aspirants should religiously eschew polysyllabic orthography. The philosophical and philological substructure of the principle is ineluctable. Excessively attenuated verbal symbols inevitably induce unnecessary complexity and, consequently exaggerate the obfuscation of the mentality of the peruser. Conversely, expressions which are reduced to the furthermost minimum of simplification and compactness, besides contributing realistic verisimilitude, constitute a much less onerous handicap to the reader’s perspicacity. Observe, for instance, the unmistakable and inescapable expressiveness of onomatopoetic interjection or monosyllabic utterances, especially when motivated under strenuous emotional circumstances. How much more appealing is their euphonious pulchritude than the pretentious and preposterous pomposity of elongated verbiage?

He posited this notion in one of his "podgrams".

It's this philosophy of his that has given me the freedom to release my angst over the "misuse" of terms like "The Lion's Share" and "Begs the Question".

Enough already, right? Who cares what it meant at the beginning?
English is a magnificently plastic language.
Let us see what happens, and let us all enjoy it.

As long as you communicate and have fun with it.
Thanks, Bob. How enjoyable and marvy.

Stephen Fry is an absolute hero in my book. He lauds Oscar Wilde for his excellent use of English and reason, and Fry is certainly in that camp.

If you're interested in the history of the English tongue, and how it's changed in the past 1,500 years I can highly recommend the book The Adventure of English by Melvyn Bragg. English is really a mix of several different languages, and he covers its evolution in delightful detail.

And talk about being an audio book reader! Robert Powell, the narrator, did an incredibly wonderful job of handling all of dialects of English past and English present. I'll bow down before him....if I ever get to see him.

The Adventure of English was also made into an eight-part TV series hosted by Bragg. When it was on History Channel International I TiVo'd the entire series and recorded it onto DVD. It is well worth watching.

Cool! I love the design as well.

Stephen Fry rocks! I love watching him every week on the telly, and reading his tweets.
