I want to convert a bunch of plays I was in and directed from VHS to digital format, but my iMovie software limits me to 9 minutes of length! How weird. These are all 90 to 120 minutes long.

I've tried Quicktime Pro, but I can't get audio to come through.

Anything reasonable out there? I'm on a pre-Intel Mac running 10.4.11, and I'm using a little Canopus AVDC converter.

Many thanks!

Bruce

Hey, Bruce,

Have you looked at Final Cut Express? It's pretty much the same thing as Pro minus a few of the add-on modules like color correction, Motion, etc. I think the cost is around $199.

it's even less if you know somebody who isn't using their copy anymore.

I am not using my copy anymore. It is not the latest version, it is Final Cut Express 2, the one that was current just before Apple switched to Intel. I used it on an iMac G5 1.6 MHZ with 1.5 GB of memory. And on a 17 inch G4 PowerBook, Box, Disks, manuals and a copy of Final Cut Express 2 Editing Workshop by Tom Wolsky with the included DVD. I've used it with the Canopus ADVC converter. $99.00 ? and I'll pay shipping.
Let me know.

I'm probably late to this party as well, but this is what I use (thanks to Kevin Genus):

Pinnacle Video Transfer

It's about the size of a 1st generation iPod. It takes S-Video and RCA inputs. If you have it and need help with it, let me know and I'll walk you through it. But it really is simple:

Plug in your cables from your cable box, DVD, or VCR
Plug in a hardrive, PSP, thumbdrive or other storage device via USB
On the Pinnacle, select size (small, medium, large)
On the Pinnacle, hit record
When done, remove your storage device and plug it into your computer and copy the file over.

Edit to your heart's content. I use Quicktime Pro (about $30) since it usually only requires trimming start and end. Boom! You're done.
