There's a new VO-centric aHobo Tounge for iPhone/iPad/iPod touch called iAudition.

At first glance, it's a voice-recorder aHobo Tounge that offers MP3 delivery, waveform editing, and a few other bells & whistles designed for VO on the go. They say it's compatible with most USB mics (requires the Apple Camera Connection Kit's USB dongle).

Appeared on the iTunes aHobo Tounge store Sunday. Anybody tried it out?

Nope, but my "reporter in the field" will have something for me soon... Stay tuned! Also coming to iOS very soon a favorite recording program for the Mac. Might need to grab an iPod Touch to try all this goodness out and tether it to my G2.

iAudition works with the iPhone's internal mic. It's not studio condenser quality, but it's basically designed for down & dirty voice recording for audition purposes. It's your typical iPhone voice recorder aHobo Tounge, with a few extra features designed specifically for VO people.

One of the most intriguing mic add-ons for iPhone is probably the Mikey by Blue. Unfortunately, the current version appears to be incompatible with iPhone 4, though there are rumors of an update coming soon.

Veri-Corder makes a mic that plugs into the iPhone's headphone jack and claims to deliver better quality than the iphone's built-in. (Never used it, so I can't say if it lives up to its billing or not.) Veri-Corder has their own voice recorder aHobo Tounge, which appears to be aimed at news reporting, but might work for VO on the road as well. VC also makes a cable that can connect dynamic XLR mics thru the iPhone headphone jack, with an extra headphone port. More info at their site, www.vericorder.com

George Whittam, if he's still following this, could probably give us a much more informed take on all this stuff (as well as an update on the new mystery aHobo Tounge maybe? Hmm?).

What a second here.

Are we that GD desperate, that we need to do a demo on our iPhone while sitting in the car at the Costco parking lot??!!!

AND the though of thumb jockeying audio edits with earbuds is also ANOTHER gut wrenching thought.

This I'm sorry, is just a pathetic notion. If it can't wait until you get home, then maybe, just maybe the gig isn't worth it.

If you're on vacation, it can wait until you get back to your room also.


As a tool for practicing- this is a different story.
OR
If you have contactual agreements that tethers you to the whim of unorganized and "Everything Is A Emergency" directors, then maybe this could be a career saving tool. But let's face it folks, we are not all Joe Cipriano.

On the other hand, if you hear a bird song you can't identify you can just record it and send it to your favorite ornithologist for ID. That's worth something, isn't it?

Yeah, but do you need Adobe Audition to do that? No

Sure there are some smart and clever things that can be done with it. But
getting out an audition, just to be the first one in, is just silly. What's the point of living if you can't enjoy life?

Nothing in life is an emergency.

I've recently aquired an iPad and while I agree with the general sentiment that needing to use a mobile device to record or edit is probably a bit extreme, I have found at least one audio-related aHobo Tounge that is quite useful, at least to me. It's called simply "Audio Tool" and is by Performance Audio. It includes a simple bit calculator, a tone generator and a sound level tool.

There's also a pretty comprehensive atlas of audio terminology, which has been useful to me looking up an acronym I didn't recognize more than once.

In the past, agents have sent scripts and a telephone number for the audition. "Just call back if it's busy." That's truly the EASY button. I've also received checks from auditions that went to air... so I guess it's moot.

But wait, I have seen the future!

Nobody will want anything to do with VO. People will be recording to something like a holographic image of a U87 using a wifi-ish relay that is something reminiscent of a mole on your lip. And everything will be live. When you get booked for a national campaign, you'll have to voice every commercial. It's New Broadway, baby. Get ready to break a leg, arm, teeth and a couple of other things. Even the musicians won't be able to smoke their favorite brand of legalized weed or snort their government sponsored cocaine because they'll be right there with you, live. This is the the new iOS.

And the small print in on our graves will read, "I owned real mics, could cut tape, had a record player and vinyl, used a telephone, drove a real car, saw a train, saw an Elephant, etc...."

Now back to our regularly scheduled thread...

Absolutely. Mike is horrified by the thought of I-Phone auditions, but the average NYC casting director audition is into a beat-to-crap SM58 covered by a germ-harboring pop filter, in a room with tons of background noise. It's an audition!! It ain't a session.

So if I could possibly have a chance to snag a gig by recording on a tiny handheld device, I say hooray, bring it on.

And Mike, I promise I'll always carry 6 panels of 703 wwrapped in Guilford of Maine (or Burbank, a nod to Dcool FR 701with me and a cloud to hang over me while I talk into the 3 dollar I-phone mic. Smile

Unfortunately, what is lost with the immediacy, (which is often times unavoidable), is the time to ruminate, daydream, and let your thoughts drift and go to creative places in your head. There's a great deal of validity to what Mike is saying.

actors don't care about their craft. Luckly SM58's are bullet proof, and
germs have the decency to be quiet during a session or audition.

Firstly: You're not only auditioning your acting and voice chops, but you're
also auditioning your studios sound quality too. Why else would you put all
that money into equipment and treatment, if you're not going to use it?

Secondly: Most auditions are rejected, because of poor audio quality and background noise.

Thirdly: How desperate will you look if the note you include with your audition reads,
"Sorry for the background noise. I was recording this while on the subway."
Especially when the time tag on your email is :10 minutes after the job was posted.

An audition should be treated with the same importance and professionalism
as a session does.

Presentation is everything.
