Looking for opinions or recommendations on 2 all purpose mics for lower baritone darker male voice, somewhere in the $100 - $600 range.
Let's say... these are mics that would cover all the bases...narration, commercial, promo, audio book, as well as mics that can work on the road with a MicPort...
I realize this may be a lot to ask....and maybe impossible to answer.... looking to streamline my setup
my premlimary picks are .. Senn 416 (used), Re20, Re 27, Harlan Hogan Mic, SP C1, Audio Technica 2020....

I use a Cascade M20u. About $130, I bought it over a mic more than twice its price after listening to them both.

I vote for the RE 20. It's proven to be a mainstay in Broadcasting for a reason. Excellent off axis rejection and rugged to beat all, except for maybe the Shure SM 58.
I've recently seen some on ebay for under 300, used of course.

Not a shotgun microphone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (I hope the exclamation points make my point clearly!)
I suggest (if you have the funds) an Neumann U-87. If not, try a modified NT1-A mic from Michael Jolley (cost will total between $450 to $600,00 USD - dependent upon the price of the NT1-A.
There are many others to choose from but you need to find the microphone which are right for YOUR voice, not the microphone suggested by anyone else. Find where you can try microphones for a few days an d try as many as you can IN YOUR STUDIO - using your equipment to make the right choice.

416, but it's out of your price range, so...
Studio Projects B1. It has a bass roll off which your voice may need.
Sounds very good and it's inexpensive, so no worries it taking it on the road.
It has nice full timbre and clarity.

You might be able to find a 416 on ebay in the $600 range---just make sure you check out the seller carefully.
Or you could get a 415, which is to my ear identical and a tad bit warmer for well under $600. I had one and liked it, and Eddie Eagle still uses on I think. |

good suggestion...had one of these a while ago and liked it...good road mic |

| AT 4040 is a good one. 299$. Acts like the u87, but way less expensive. |

The MXL V67 with a simple tube upgrade to a Seimen's or Telefunken NOS tube ($40-$60 extra) has been proven to be one of the best, low cost vocal microphones, holding its own in shootouts against microphones costing 3- 5 times the price.
It appears to be particularly well suited for baritone voices. The microphone is also available as a full mod from Mr. Jolly

There is another mic called the V69, which is also still in your price range, including the cost of the mod.

i replaced the tube in my mxl V69 with a NOS mullard and got terrific results out of a $300 mic. super-easy to do.
