VO-BB - 20 YEARS OLD!

i had the honor of interviewing Tom Denton, SR last year. Mr. Denton was a 18 year old Marine guarding a dock at Pearl Harbor on that Sunday morning. Shortly after Pearl Harbor, Mr. Denton went to flight school and spent the rest of the war training pilots in the Northrop F-15 Reporter - a reconnaissance aircraft.

Less than two months after this interview, Mr. Denton passed away.

i just thought i'd post it here today as a reminder to myself and to everyone else.

My son just got home from school. He is in the 6th grade in public school. He knows all about what today means and has grown up knowing it's importance. Sadly, he said that no one mentioned anything at all in school today about it being Pearl Harbor Day. When he asked his 26 year old social studies teacher if she knew what today was she just said "Tuesday". He then asked her specifically "What is the significance of December 7th?" Do you know what her response was? "18 days until Christmas" How disappointing and pathetic is that?

very sad indeed. My Nana was working that morning in Honolulu at the phone company and she got the call from Fort Shafter that they were under attack. The Japanese had mistimed their attack. She phoned Grandpa to get the names of the Generals and Admirals to contact and started putting the word out to the island. This is a big day in the Haas house.
