I've got a cheapie Behringer Eurorack mixer that I use strictly as a headphone monitor. I've got my MicPort Pro headphone output going into line in 1/2 of my mixer. This is to listen as I record as I've got Audition outputting through the MicPort Pro so as not to conflict with system sounds.

Then I've got the soundcard output going into Line in 3/4 of my mixer. This is simply for system sounds.

All around pretty basic setup. 2 lines going into the mixer coming out of my headphones.

The problem is that when I plug both of these into the mixer, the microphone distorts terribly for no apparent reason. Is there an impedance issue or something that would cause this? Note, of course, that the MicPort is USB, so the USB never goes into the mixer, only the headphone output.

Is Windows potentially sending audio from one to the other? Check the properties of your recording devices to make sure they're not being monitored by the soundcard incorrectly.

No, this is a weird electrical issue. without anything playing, as soon as I plug the sound card into the mixer, the headphones start distorting. Oddly enough, if I hit record, the audio itself is not distorted. It's just something with the headphone out when I plug those two devices in.

Which Eurorack mixer are you using?

If you're using the Eurorack UB1002 or the UB1202, look for the input sensitivity switch on the stereo channel you're using- according to the docs its right above the balance knob and below the FX knob on the right side of the channel controls.

I ran into something similar with my mixer at one point, when it was set to -10 the signal was highly distorted.

It's an ancient Eurorack MX602A. Again, I use it only as a headphone monitor.

Corey, I don't have any input sensitivity switches on this mixer. I'm really scratching my head why simply plugging another device in would make one channel sound awful.

2TK to Ctrl Room or 2TK to Mix?

Is this a new problem that's just developed?

The MicPort Pro is new and I've never had more than one device plugged in so I couldn't say. I think I need to plug something else in and see if I get the same results.

Maybe check the soundcard output properties in Windows and disable AGC or reduce its level. It's possible it's being over-driven from the PC?

I would first ask for clarification. You say the Headphone out is plugged into channel 1/2?
I gather that should be either 1 or 2, correct?
Next, See what happens if you have just the MHobo Tounge headphone out plugged into channel 1, nad disconnect the system sounds from the board. Also note the gain level on the channel that the MHobo Tounge is plugged into on the board and make sure you are not overmodulating. ***EDIT*** Check the Headphone Output level on the MHobo Tounge as well***
If you get the same result, then plug the MHobo Tounge headphone out into channel 3/4 in the "L" input and try that.
If either works out to sound OK then plug the System Sounds into 5/6 in the "L" input, unless you have a L R connector for that cable.
Let me know how that turns out

It should be noted that "distortion" is probably not the right word. More of a breaking up sort of grinding sound when I talk into it. Very hard to describe.

The headphone out from the MicPort goes into stereo line in 1/2. It's split into L/R

The mic sounds fine as soon as I unplug the soundcard cables from the mixer

Adjusting the mic gain and headphone out has no effect.

Same result. Sounds fine if it's just the MHobo Tounge. Sounds like crud when the soundcard cables are also plugged in.

Here's an odd development. The MHobo Tounge gets hot when I have the soundcard plugged into the mixer and it's doing the crap sound thing.

Ya know all of this would be solved if I could use the MHobo Tounge as my default playback device. but unlike a soundcard, when I set it up in windows to be the default playback device, it gets locked to either system sounds or ASIO4All.

Strange symptoms... is it possible to send along some pictures of the board and the setup behind the PC? It seems to me that you dont need 2 connections from the headphone out on the MHobo Tounge into the board, one should suffice since a mic is mono only.
I would also suggest to make sure the output from the PC soundcard is from the proper output connector, that being either speaker or headphone. (just trying to eliminate any possible problems)
