Congrats Darren!

I may very well be one of the mediocre voices that Phillip refers to, but for my part, v123 has always paid for itself...I tell people that in VO, agents are kinda like banks that want to lend you money when you don't need it..I probably not booking enough work for an agent to notice me, so P2P sites, production house rosters, and word of mouth are how I get work..

Congrats Darren!

"To P2P or to P2P", that is the (oft repeated) question. The main point here is that it's worked for you. From a financial viewpoint, this one job has paid for over two years worth of subscriptions to V123, as as such, is worthwhile. I never had much luck with 123 (only the trial membership), but I have managed to make Voices (paid membership) work for me... not so much with the winning of auditions, but from the contacts made and the (repeat) work generated from a number of clients who wanted to work with me directly.

Cheers
Peter

I suppose that means that agents aren't viable either, since many jobs get sent to multiple agents and result in far more than 49 auditioners not landing a particular job. Just sayin'...

I don't see these points so much as an argument for or against the viability of P2Ps and/or agents. I see them as incentive not to rely on any third party to do your marketing for you.

I've yet to an encounter any intermediary that gave even a 1/16 of a crap about the success of my business as I do.

Jeff, Phillip, Doug and Drew all make good points. Don't count on anyone else to do your marketing. Look at the major players (Joe Cip etc.) They have VERY good agents who earn a lot from the relationship. Joe does a lot of PR and marketing. You need to do the work.

Too many VOs spend too much time auditioning on P2Ps, surfing the web and on social media. Make contacts, cold calls etc. People need to know who you are and what you do.

(Edited to say - way to go Darren!!! and I bet you don't just rely on 123 for the majority of your work.)

Thanks all, much appreciated. I got a call from the ad agency after the session saying that they want me to voice their national radio campaign too. I'm thrilled! Just goes to prove that among all the dross, there lies gold on V123!

Yesterday was a good day! And I did my first ISDN session from home. Really hope I've turned a corner and hope things will get better now. A lot of time and money spent, but it's a major investment for the future.

A certain Mr Banks has been extremely helpful too I might add. Don't know if you've heard of him... he dabbles in voiceovers a bit Wink

Congrats, Darren! That's terrific. Like you, I'm a V123 believer. Over the years I've established many wonderful repeat clients (including Cisco) thanks to V123. Plus one national spot. May the good work continue to flow your way.

Congrats, Darren, that's great news! And it must be a great feeling to know that all the time, money and energy spent on your new ISDN studio wasn't for naught! I'm sure that there are lots more gigs in your future!

In sharing the following, I don't mean to brag at all, it's just offered up for comparison and inspiration: In the last two weeks, I booked three national spots (US). One was booked through one of my agents, and the other two came through relationships I've forged at ad agencies and production companies I've worked with. (Both of which I first introduced myself to through my own marketing efforts, by the way) For the ad agency gig, the casting consisted of just two people, with no custom audition necessary; the client just listened to our demos. For the production company gig, I had no competition; the studio simply recommended me to their client, who booked me for the gig the next day.

Sure beats the odds you face on the P2Ps, no?
(Not intended as a criticism of the P2Ps so much as it is intended to point out the importance of marketing yourself directly to the people who can hire you.)

Congratulations Darren!! Well done.

Don't everyone else run out and pluck down a lot money on P2P's and expect Darren like results. It is far from the norm. Listen to what Phillip has to say. It may be one small tool in your tool box. Be selective in what you audition for on P2P sites. Use time wisely. Do other marketing.
