|
|
Being from Chicago (and LA), I found this feedback from a fellow American talent agent on an American online voice over site a little weird. I have to think about this one! Maybe I've been living over here in England too long. It's a little bit laughable, and a little bit worrisome. h-m-m-m!
"You obviously have a foreign accent, so why didn't you use it? Unless the copy tells you "American Accent Only" then be yourself. I can tell you've had some acting class and experience doing voiceover. I bet your read would be a lot better if you didn't force an american accent. Im going to guess you're from England and lived in at least one other country which is why your accent is so unusual. My primary advice for you is to stop forcing your accent. Sometimes an unusual, indistinguishable accent works extremely well." _________________ Intuit and do it!

Stefania,
You still sound American to me! (Amazing what some people assume and then presume, isn't it.) _________________ Be well,

As a Brit in NY, I live in abject horror of it happening the other way around. I think I'll now have nightmares about people thinking I sound like an American, putting on a Brit accent!

Well, the good news is, you can probably come up with the "neutral English" (i.e not American, not Canadian, not British, not Australian) that occasionally gets requested on Voices.com or Bodalgo. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Stef...with my delivery in French, people have sometimes asked me "I know you're a native French speaker, but where the heck are you FROM?"
It's all in the ear of the beholder.
(Btw: I ask them..."Where do you WANT me to be from?")
If you are getting work. Don't worry about it.
That said....my father, who grew up having been taught "Proper" English since childhood, never lost his British sound, but it did apparently attenuate/change a bit over the years.
The way to help keep it as "authentic" as possible is to expose yourself to that delivery on a regular basis. (TV, radio, internet...)
But language is fluid.
When I first moved to France at the age of 20, my cousins used to say that I spoke like their DAD. After being there for a year, my delivery changed a bit...and became more "modern" but still neutral...which has been a boon to my VO biz.
