Alright, I spent an hour last night on the Adobe forums with no luck! Here's a true rookie question:

When I do Save As in Adobe Audition 1.5 and select mp3, my file appears to be saved as a Windows Media Audio mp3 (it has the WMA icon beside the file name).

If I e-mail the file, can the file only be opened with Windows Media Player?
Is there another way to convert it to mp3 without the WMA?

As long as it is an MP3 format it will be playable by any application supporting that format. If it has the mp3 extension (which it should) the icon may appear as a Windows Media Player, Winamp, or iTunes based on the associated application. With iTunes, even though the icon looks the same, there is a distinction between the filetypes.

If you navigate to the file and right click on the icon, and select Properties, it will show you what program it opens with and allow you to change that. Your other sound files, saved in other formats, probably indicate that they open with Windows Media Player also. You can change what program they open with if you want to, but you don't need to and it doesn't affect the way they will open when you send them to somebody else. Whoever receives your file will open it with their default player for files of that particular type.

And all these files will of course open in Audition, as long as you are in Audition and select Open there.

I sent an .mp3 file to a radio station. On my computer, the file has the WMA icon with it.

When the station attempted to open it, the file was associated with WMA and opened with Media Player. They want a straight .mp3 file that can be opened in whatever application software they choose (not associated with WMA).

They're telling me when it's done right, my file name will have the .mp3 extension and NOT be associated with WMA or anything else. However, they are not able to tell WHAT to do about it.

Any ideas?

There are a number of audio file convertors online for free. You should to be able to save the file from your audio software..e.g. CoolEdit, Soundforge etc. If you can't make your software work try downloading AudioConvertor http://www.gold-software.com/AudioConvertorPlus-file8187.html that should do the job for you.

Oh, the magic of computers.... they are here to help... then arrived Microsoft.

Go into your Windows Media Player, click on the Options tab, click on the file type tab, now check "select all", and hit O.K.

This will associate all your file types correctly... except in certain cases where ADPCM and uLaw and mLaw are concerned. It will also make it so WMP is the default player for those files as well. If you use Quicktime, QT will try to re-associate itself with it's default file types when you next play a QT file.

Now, make sure your file asscoiations in the properties tab (after right clicking on a file) associates it properly - i.e.: .mp3 NOT WMA.

Many times you can rename a file from .wma to .mp3. If the above does not work give it a try... I do not know this as a matter of fact, but it should also work.

This may take care of the problem.

Frank, I believe you nailed it! Media Player was defaulted to all mp3 files. I deselected that option, and my file now shows as an AA mp3.

Thanks a million for everyone's help. I think I'll need a lot more!
