A prospective client has asked:
"If we were to simultaneously send you multiple courses for recording, would the word count of all the courses be combined to get a lower per-word rate, or would the word count be re-set for each course?"
I would think the word count would apply to each course; not in total, but how do you folks handle this?
Thanks! _________________ Mike

I usually keep each project separate, but I can see bundling it all if it is presented all at once. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

I have a client for whom I do work several times a month. The rate card we've worked out includes a sliding scale based on how many pages (of a consistent format template they always use) are involved. From time to time they will have a large multi-part project and I typically given them the rate for the combined page count of the entire project; but then this client represents well into 5 figures of income every year. I don't mind giving volume discounts to people who send me work over and over and over again with not a single audition. _________________ Be well,

Thanks, Bob! In my case (at least for this prospect), it would be several different courses lumped together; not several parts of the same course. And I wouldn't mind offering a volume discount to someone who kept me busy, either! _________________ Mike

For non-broadcast narration work, all scripts that are delivered to me at one time get treated as one project as far as the rate is concerned.
I have several ongoing narration clients (although I'd always love more!) who send me copy in bulk so they can get the lower rate. It's good for them, and I know that they send more work my way because of it--so it's good for me, too.
I stipulate:
The scripts must be non-broadcast
The scripts have to be final, approved, and ready-to-record
All scripts delivered inside a 24-hour window, for a single client*, may be combined
*For example, if a studio sends me narrations for Jose Cuervo, Invisalign, and Miracle-Gro, they get priced as three gigs. If all three are for Jose Cuervo, then they can be batched. _________________ the Amy Snively family of brands for all your branded thing needs.

I, too, give bulk discounts to clients who send me multiple projects at once. I have a set rate for non-broadcast that basically works out like this:
0-5:00 = $xxx.xx
5:01 - 10:00 = $xxx.xx
10:01 - 20:00 = $xxx.xx
and so on. It's a sliding scale where the longer the project is, the less it costs on a per-minute bases.
Now suppose they send me 5 scripts that might be a bit over a minute each. Rather than charge them 5X the 0-5:00 rate (the highest per-minute rate), I bundle them and give them the lower 5:01 - 10:00 rate.
They're happy, I'm still earning a nice living, and it helps cement our working relationship.

I have -
A minimum session fee which covers up to one hour of my time.
A half day rate up to 4 hours.
A day rate up to 7 hours.
There are in the UK Equity* minimum rates (the union to which I belong) so I will stick to them when applicable.
I also have discretion so will accept/charge
That's seems fair.
That's all they have.
I don't care as I'd quite like to do the job.
