Went to my doctor the other day for a throat problem. All is good now, but she asked if I had insurance for my voice. I had never thought of that. Does anyone else have any insurance on their vocal chords if something goes wrong and you are out of biz for, say, 3-4 weeks and cannot do any voice work?
Does insurance like this exist? Is this a question for Lloyd's of London? Just like Mary hart has a million dollar policy on her legs?

I'm wondering if this isn't something that would be covered by standard disability insurance, although I suppose it would be cool to say that one's voice is insured by Lloyds of London.

This was from insure.com. I must say I've thought about it. Having to have a consistent voice for many clients, and all of the voices different, has been challenging lately as I lost my voice for a week and it's still not right. Our household would lose out big if I couldn't work.

You might also consider business interruption insurance as a rider to your property insurance. If, god forbid, your studio burns down, your property insurance will cover the building, and the interruption insurance will cover your lost income while you rebuild.

Interesting....We've been talking about this a bit at my house since this weekend. 
We have a homeowner's policy of course, but "real" business insurance.
Will have to start checking into that.

I actually looked into this a few years ago, and although I think you were joking- you're right, Lloyd's of London WAS the only place I could (or the agent working for me) could find that would even think about a policy on my voice. The cost? Fogettaboutit.
I think Dan's got the right idea about short and long term disability....Thanks for the reminder...it's something that's been put on hold that shouldn't have been.

I know someone who has insured her voice with Lloyds. I checked it out, too, Moe. Crazy expensive.

Hoping to resurrect this thread! I just had a meeting with a financial planner, and he was pushing disability insurance strongly. He checked around, and indeed, as Moe indicated, Lloyd's of London is the only provider that will cover a voice-over artist. (for "own-occupation" insurance, not any occupation)
So is it worth it? My quote was $126/mth. Upon a successful claim, (unable to work due to throat injury or something) they would pay $3300/mth for up to 5 years, then a flat fee of $300,000 to consider the claim fulfilled.
Some interesting statistics Lloyd's passed along:

Of people my age (32), the number who continue in a voice over career until retirement is less than 1%. That's right - 99% don't do it long term.
Our adviser also told us that 18% of the U.S. population is on disability, and that 3 out of 10 people will have to go on disability at some point. All this makes it seem like a worthwhile investment...but I'm still hesitant since VO is such a unique niche. Of the 18% of the population on disability, how many of them lost their voice permanently?
We're leaning towards not getting it, since it's far more likely that I would end up changing careers than sustaining a catastrophic voice loss.
