So I've never been particularly still when I'm in the booth -- I'm the type who needs to gesture, sometimes wildly, when I voice...
But lately I've noticed my hands doing something really strange, subconsciously... As I gesture, my index finger is curled in on both hands, so it kind of looks like I'm gesturing with a weird, deformed paddle-hand...
(...admit it -- you just curled your index finger in on both hands so you could see what I'm talking about, didn't you?...)
Even when I try to be conscious about just relaxing my hand, that finger automatically pulls in whenever I forget about it.
Anyone else have odd habits in the booth? _________________ Always look on the bright side of life.

At least pointing accomplishes something -- I still can't figure out what I'm doing... _________________ Always look on the bright side of life.

That is the Bill Clinton trademark. But you'll need to curl the rest of your fingers in and extend the index out just past the others...and place the thumb over the curled index.

Oh... thanks a bunch for that
I've now been analyzing my hands, and I'm now really self-conscious about gesticulating while touching the tips of my index fingers to the tips of my thumbs, waving these little circles around...
Cheers (I think)

After my last long-form narration session, I woke up the next day and couldn't figure out why my index fingers hurt... Too much curling.
Everybody's doing weird things with their hands, now, aren't they...? Sorry. _________________ Always look on the bright side of life.

I say do whatever it takes to get the job done. Since being coached by Marc Cashman, I've gotten a lot more physical in my booth. That's the fun of voice over!

For what it's worth, a while back I was doing a VO for a little on-line thing and at the end, I found myself with both my hands holding up my rear end.
No idea why.
The copy wasn'tTHAT good. |

I've gone from no hand movement, to wildly shaking my hands, to somewhere in the middle. What I've found though is that as soon as I start thinking about what my hands are doing, I start disconnecting a bit with what I am saying. _________________ Joe Szymanski

I'm a finger and thumb squeezer too- but on very technically difficult scripts when I have to maintain a smooth, flowing read - my fingers go spastic - jiggling each finger like you do when you've been typing too long and need to get to stretch them out. I figure it's my bodies way of releasing the tension I'm building up with the focus on my voice.

I don't generally think about what my hands are doing -- until one of them whacks into the microphone. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.
