I'll sum up my experiences regarding mouth noise with a picture. It illustrates both my enjoyment of finding the wee buggers, as well as the exhilarating fandango of feelings that show themselves as I spend ages trying to correct it:

My nemesis lately has been stomach noises. I'm not even hungry and my stomach suddenly sounds like a damn mountain lion. Usually right in the middle of a long passage. _________________ Corey "Vox Man" Snow

Yonie, what drives me crazy are the stealth noises. What I mean by that is you get a blip of a noise in a word....you narrow it down to a small segment with the noise. Then maybe even down to the quarter of the word with the noise, and then no matter what you do, you cannot find the actual spot to get rid of the sound. All the bauds look perfectly shaped...no irregularity. So you start eliminating one baud at a time and no matter what you do, it makes zero difference in the elimination of the sound. OH GOD! I hate those! hahahahaha _________________ TG2

My dear dear friend Amy rhymes with lively showed me the spectral view option on Audition. Change to that view and you can see the little blip pop out in a different color. Zoom in a bit and put your cursor on the different color and then change the view back to waveform and you should be able to find the little bugger. _________________ Playing for a living...

The pencil tool in ProTools is a godsend for that too. Simply "redraw" the little bugger out of there! _________________ Wicked huge.....in India.

Spectral view is the bomb. Depending on the version you are using, you can even lower the db of a particular setting just by highlighting it and using your curser. And in spectral there is no doubt where that noise is. Make a keyboard shortcut for it! _________________ 006 member of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Mic. Bonded by sound.

Darren,
Hopscotch (the sweets) store over in Barnet has some vocal drops that are very good as well. I think that's what they called actually, vocal drops.
I also have some in the studio. And water. And gargling before a session sometimes helps too.
boo hiss...I hate when I get mouth clicks...sometimes i can save the recording...sometimes just have to carefully re-do that bit to match it up with the rest. _________________ Intuit and do it!

A few tips, Darren -
Apple juice alone will not help much. You need to eat the SKIN of the apple. There is pectin in the skin, and that's what helps lubricate your mouth. Also, there is a throat lozenge product here in the US called Halls Breezers that I use often - it has a high pectin content.
Avoid salty foods before a session. No Chinese, so salty french fries, etc. Salt extracts moisture from your mouth. Caffeine is also a diuretic - it gets water out of your body, which makes matters worse. So avoid that as well.
One last tip - some mouth noises are from lip smacks. Use some sort of lip moisturizer to avoid these.
Hope this helps! _________________ Best regards,

I do three things to keep mouth noise to a minimum.
1. Brush and floss my teeth and tongue several times throughout the day.
Surprisingly, that gets rid of a lot.
2. Take small bites of a Granny Smith apple throughout a session.
3. Sip on this: http://bit.ly/cZoPNI
Together, these work wonders! _________________ Lisa |
