Well, tomorrow is my initiation to the world of television. I am being interviewed for a 6 minute segment on a techie program called 'Call for Help'. The topic, as I have mentioned before, is audio on the web.
Any advice from you veteran TV folk? Any colours I shouldn't wear? Anything I should watch out for? It's not live, thank goodness; but I don't want to seem like a total novice (which I am).
Thanks. _________________ Elaine

Red is a no-no as are stripes or small patterns.
Relax. The onus is on the interviewer to guide you through the timeframe. _________________ DBCooperVO.com |

Also don't wear white as it messes with the white balance of the camera. Have fun!!! |

stay away from black as well. Remember to smile from time to time, and maintain eye contact with the interviewer. It's always good to ask the director "where is your bottom of frame at" just so you know how high you have to keep your hands for gestures. This is especially important if you speak with your hands like I do.
As cliche as it is, try and relax and 'have fun with it'! You'll be fine. You will get into a groove and find that it's rather easy speaking on a topic that you are well versed in. Best of luck. |

Since you're being interviewed it sounds like you don't have to worry about looking into the camera.
The inteviewer is the only person you need to really think about. Have a pleasant conversation with them and the rest will come along.
(If you ever do have to talk to camera, just look into the lens or prompter glass like it's the one and only person you want to talk to.)

Make sure your teeth are so white that they light up your face when you smile.
Wear something casual... not too business... and in a blue color scheme.
Pumps or sandals to match your wardrobe.
Go easy on the make-up... let them decide if you need more.

Bailey brings up a good point, dress from head to toe, you never know how wide the shot will be (they will invariably use more than one camera so they can have cutaways to use to cover jumpcuts later) Wear colors that look good on you, jeweltones work well, stay away from busy patterns, and large clangy jewelry, and make sure you wear something on top to which they can easily attach a lav, and watch that any necklace type jewelry you might wear will not come in contact with the lav.
most of all just have a conversation with the interviewer and have fun, it will be over before you know it. |

Okay, so here's the deal: Don't wear Black, don't wear white, and for goodness sake, don't wear colors - especially if they are solids or any sort of pattern. If you are gonna wear shoes, make sure they are on the right feet and that both socks are the same color. Six minutes is too long, try to trim it to sixty seconds and of course, make sure you don't stick your fingers in your ears and stick out your tongue and make strange noises.
Seriously, let the interviewer take you where he (or she) wants to go. Just like dancing, let him (or her) lead. Keep your comments short enough that he (or she) won't have to cut you off, but at the same time give enough information to be useful and informative. Generally, three sentences should be enough for each reply, if he (or she) wants more, he (or she) can take you in that direction. |
