Hello Everyone, I'm Jason Lawson, an aspiring voice talent (I suppose I'm a novice) in Virginia who is actively studying the acting side of the business (wink wink nudge nudge) I'm certainly working at it, tho not making money at this point, nor would I try to until I have some more formal training etc..

About 1 year ago the light bulb that kept coming on telling me to "do vo" came on, and stayed on for more then a few minutes or hours lol. It had flickered many times since playing with my dads old wolensack recorder back in the day 'Geek'

My s.a.t.'s said I should be an air traffic controller, or disk jockey.
Luckily (I suppose) that wasn't in the cards back then.

I have taken a few webinar classes, and continue to read and study. I also have attended the Charlotte NC meetup with Gabrielle Nistico. (Lon Bumgarner was guest director for script reading) I hope to train with Gabby and vo careers during phase 2 of my, pre-demo, formal training plan.

Over the last 9 months I've constructed a professional quality home studio. Admittedly I can only achieve - 60 db when it's already relatively quiet outside, but I continue to improve and upgrade as I go.

I really enjoy seeing you folks on ewabs, which I watch weekly, and of course I try to keep up with all the major bloggers and innovators in the industry.

My background is varied and includes some formal musical training etc..
I have A+  comp. technician certification with a varied background from nuclear pipe fitting, and industrial electrician to owning an auto repair shop. I was never an amateur radio operator tho I did have a licensed station when I owned the auto repair shop. Dad was always an avid c.b.'er his old D-104 is on my desktop atm but he never did go for his license
and no he never ran heat either lol,

In a lot of ways I look at the amateur avalanche like auto repair shops, theres always cheap charlies and humble hooley's…but if you really want quality you will always have to pay for the cost of the professionals training and equipment. I think I'm probably paraphrasing paul at this point tho.

So I will go back to studying the twisted wave manual, I just downloaded it onto my new (used) macbook pro,
but not before a huge thank you to D.B. for this fine bbs, and to everyone else I haven't met yet, but feel as if I know, from reading all their excellent advice and encouragement.

Jason

Hi Jason. Welcome in!

A tape machine! I got my start as well fiddling with an old Wolensack recorder...with the "magic eye" level meter...back in the day.

Hi Jason... we'll wait for the girls to take you through the formalities (I'm not going there again, I always get beaten-uHobo Happy. I think you'll find a lot of people here that only manage to achieve better than -60dB when they've taken care of the local landscapers, kids, dogs etc. Begging usually works... if not, threats, gags & restraining orders will do it.

I really miss my Revox Cry

... and my WEM Copycat, and tape-loops hanging from door handles, and big brass splicing blocks, and assorted mini-spools of different coloured leader, and my collection of different aluminium reels plastered all over the wall...

Wow thanks, you guys rock !

Thanks so much Bob, I see that you sometimes attend the meetup in Charlotte, and I hope to see you there sometime…a bit of a drive for me but well worth it when they have content that pertains to my specific pursuits.

Boblog is one of my very favorite places to keep up with things, it's certainly a goldmine in its own right, and a testament to the kind of dedication I see among the best

If I could bend your ear sometime as to local training possibilities I'd be greatly indebted to you, as I value your experience in the region quite highly.

Thanks Scott I'm looking into some acting classes at my local community theater that seems to be a pretty good bet…
For $60 I'll get …
This new five week course at The American Theatre studio is led by Hollywood and Las Vegas professional actor Lee Michaels. The course will cover Improvisation and cold reading, scene study and monologue, commercials on camera as well as stage presence and image.

It's only about 5 or 6 hours, but I think it will be relevant enough to go for it.

Thank you Frank, also for your sage advice to never regret spending appropriate money for good equipment.

ahhh yes Chuck, I didn't know it was called a magic eye lol, but I recall being fascinated by it, and the general idea of something visual that corresponded to my voice.

Wow Bish it sounds like you were working at it while I was watching the magic eye go back and forth. I only played around and did a few skits and things with my friends back then. Eventually tho I learned to play the guitar well enough to create a few dub pieces but then sort of got away from it.
Luckily before I was discovered by a band and put on world tour lol

Hi Fran so nice to meet you too.

Hi Donna, Thank You. I suppose I'm guilty of pre-lurking for a few months before I felt I was far enough along to be able to contribute, at least a little on occasion.

Hello there Michael I'm pleased to make your acquaintance as well

I have a google plus account (JasonLawson121) a work in progress, but there are some home studio pics, I'll save you from my audio content until I post in the feedback forum soon so I can perhaps get a bit of guidance on where I should concentrate my efforts.

I have facebook as well, but the profile isn't as up to date.

I'm fairly new to the whole social networking scene so theres not a lot of content aside from studio stuff.

I'd love to add some folks to my circles or, be added as the case may be.

oh and just in case u were wondering no I'm not related to Lawson microphones,(that I'm aware of) however it -is- interesting that I'm also from Tennessee originally, so I plan to contact them at some point and chat a bit. I'd sure love to test drive one eventually.

Jason

Jason,

Thank you for your very kind comments about my blog. I did live in Charlotte for nearly 8 years, but moved to Pittsburgh in the middle of 2010, so we're not going to run into one another at a voiceover meet up in Charlotte any time soon.

However, I'd be happy to chat with you about options for coaching and training. My email address is bob@bobsouer.com and you're welcome to get in touch any time.
