Chris has long had a problem with inserting his size 11 foot in his size 11 mouth. Just another reason why Billy Crystal was the host this year, and not Chris. _________________ Don Brookshire

Chris Rock finds it easy because the only character he's hired for is Chris Rock. He's a natural in the role.
Let's also not forget that he's not a newbie. He's had tv shows, been on the comedy circuit. Comic timing comes naturally to him.
So maybe, just maybe, it IS easy for him. _________________ Jeff

I think this sums up the discussions I've had with people about the topic. Chris Rock almost always gets to play himself. |

I think Jeffrey said it well. Rock is a pretty one dimensional guy. In order to not be too redundant let me expand some thoughts there. A old circuit comedian told me as a teenage pretender that "You need to have a gimmick" And there is no doubt that a "gimmick", a one dimensional performance that resonates and sticks in your mind can work.
Now a few years have taught me that you do not have to "have a gimmick" although it CAN work that way. You can be a Jack Lemon, or Brando, or simply a great character actor that people will come to and say CREATE for me. Chris Rock does indeed find it easy. He is a talented and smart guy too, or even the one dimension does not work. Many of us, myself included aspire to be able to create, to do different characters, to have a (what is for us) more interesting journey. Rock's can work....and there's nothing wrong with being a millionaire.
At the end of the day, the trail, the life, the journey, the career, the event, the show, you sometimes have to decide what you want. To even have that option is a good thing. _________________ There are rules to the Universe. Learn them and prosper. www.HumbleVoiceover.com |

Chris Rock is a talented performer.
He has worked really hard & crafted a very successful career for himself.
For THAT, I applaud him. Really, I do.
He became the "Chris Rock" that we know today through that hard work & commitment to his work. THAT'S why he get's paid so well. Because he's "Chris Rock" NOT because VO is so easy.
He's comic and he made people laugh. He did his job and got paid well. On to the next gig! _________________ Liz de Nesnera O.A.V. ~ Livin' The VO Dream!

OK, this made me laff.
And part of Chris Rock's personality is abrasiveness, so as said recently elsewhere in the media world, "What did they expect?" _________________ DBCooperVO.com

i'm thinking he's simply ignorant of what a vo really does, beyond his one-liners fed to him by the sound engineer _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!

As I understand the business (from watching Tom Hanks and others talk about it), he was fibbing quite a bit about how much work it is. They record most of those characters separately, so to make sure they can match up all the pieces of dialog in editing they have all the actors read each line several times in many different shades.
Still, a pretty easy line of work for those who have the ability.

To be honest, I really don't like Chis Rock. I find him one-dimensional, loud, racist, obnoxious, totally unfunny and relying on (and perpetuating) hackneyed stereotypes for cheap laughs.
That being said, I would never make the mistake of saying he's untalented, doesn't make people laugh, hasn't worked hard to get where he is or doesn't warrant his high fees in a competitive market. Me not liking him is just a personal opinion.
However... an interesting reaction here at home was that it was unprofessional to disrespect any other section of the industry on such a public platform. We've seen recent outcries over Christian Bale's tirade against a crew member and Andy Sirkis dissing the graphics guys. I know these are not the same, but even when veiled in the guise of a self-deprecatory joke, the effect is the same (as seen by the cross-community VO reaction).
I don't particularly like award shows, but The Oscars are meant to be a platform for the entertainment industry to slap itself on the back in a very public way and give the public at large a chance to celebrate with Tinseltown...
Maybe it was just an error of judgement to put Chris Rock on live in front of 40 million Americans.
Cheers

It was a joke. That's what the man does for a living: take something ordinary and aggrandize it for comedic effect. This is why a good comedian's material remains in the public consciousness long after the joke.
From the amount of buzz this has generated, I'd say it worked. |

Bob cracked me up.
I looked at my husband as soon as the words were said and said, "there's gonna be flack about that tomorrow but it was funny." My take was that he was surprised that he can make a living out of doing voice over. Many days I feel the same way, too, though making millions isn't the way it works over here. _________________ 006 member of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Mic. Bonded by sound.
