Late to the party, but FWIW.... I've been on HCTZ for years for BP, and have found over time that the dry huffs abate somewhat after your body adjusts to the meds. Your doc provided the med of choice for a reason.... give it a chance to work.

Exercise has the added benefit of strengthening your core and improving your breathing, particularly if the exercise is low impact, aerobic exercise, such as bicycling, kayaking, etc. It will also benefit your BP, perhaps lessening your need for the meds, provided you make it a regular part of your routine. A healthy body is a better performer, and exercise is good for the soul, too.

Lastly, hydration is key to avoiding the huffs. My doctor recommended sparkling water with lime or lemon, which stimulates the salivary glands, and additionally can help to relieve dry mouth. My go-to beverage has become Deer Park Sparkling in lemon, lime, and orange, commonly available in groceries and wholesale clubs for around $7-8 a case. Healthy, effective, tasty, and affordable.

Yep. Can we get an amen for hydration?

Where I live, the humidity gets as low as 2 percent (seriously); and a body can really feel that!

Hydration is a mantra up here.
