I'm new to Logic Pro and have figured out most of the basics of what I need it to do. But the correct process for doing one trivial task has so far eluded me: How do I select a small section of sound, copy it, and then paste it to a different part of the track?

Specifically, what I'm usually trying to do with this is to extend the silence between sentences or paragraphs to adjust the pacing.

Ideally I'd be doing this in a track that has been flattened and merged.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Tony

TC:

I don't think there are many Logic users in the world of VO, mainly for the fact that it just ain't the right tool for the job of recording, editing, mastering single VO tracks. One reason I hate Logic is the ironic title of the software. So many functions are illogical (such as you have discovered). You might want to take some Logic courses, watch some tutorials, or drop it for TwistedWave.

My 2 cents only...

For this specific task, Duncan, you might want to search for "slip mode logic". I don't know if that's the name in the actual program, but you should be able to get some answers with tutorials.

Yonie: Slip mode wasn't precisely what I needed, but searching for that did lead me in the right direction. I think my problem is mode-related, and I also think I've figured it out.

George: I get where you're coming from, but when I think back to learning Pro Tools, it didn't seem any less illogical than the ironically named Logic does to me right now. Equal amounts of banging my head against the wall before finding the (often simple) solution. The problem I'm finding with Logic, though, is exactly what you mention: Few VO people use it. So almost all of the tutorials I've found (Lynda.com, etc.) and most of the stuff people have posted on YouTube revolves around music production, which is very often completely unhelpful for my lowly purposes.

I do like how customizable the keyboard shortcuts are in Logic. So far it's been serving me well enough.

Of course, I'm still early in the game...

Thanks, guys.

If your purposes are so "lowly" then, again, why are you using Logic? It's every bit as powerful and complex as Pro Tools, and therefor as overkill for editing VO tracks. TwistedWave.com has programmable keyboard shortcuts, too. It's got a free demo, and it runs on Mac OS, iOS, and web browsers.
But, you don't have to take my word for it...

If you are looking to insert silence between passages in order to adjust pacing, Logic has a cool feature called "insert silence between locators'.. you set the amount of silence you require by adjusting locators in the timeline and assign a key command to "insert silence...." you can also choose whether you want to move the region to the right or not.

if you are looking to assign room tone between passages by copying and pasting, its also possible but clunky as hell..

everything and I mean everything in Logic can be assigned a key command... However, its not the kind of program you can just sit down at and figure out in an hour or two.. You're not gonna see a lot of VO peeps on Logic because its not the most intuitive. I think its possible though to narrow it down to a good dozen basic functions for audio editing, assign key commands and just get used to it but using it day after day..

Logic excels in production... the including effects are mind boggling...

ProTools is far far more streamlined and easier to navigate as an audio editor than Logic. very rarely, if ever, have I seen an engineer in any session I've done with Logic as opposed to ProTools up on the monitor in the control room, and there's a reason.

That's what I'm trying to do. Would you mind describing the method you use? I'd like to know.

Thanks.

I was being facetious.

I took a look at TwistedWave. It doesn't appear to have punch-in recording -- or at least there's no mention of it in the online documentation. I need to be able to punch in so I can edit on the fly. Pro Tools has that, as does Logic. Are there any others that handle punching in as smoothly as Pro Tools and Logic do? I'm always willing to play with new software if I think it will improve my workflow.

In ProTools, to insert room tone between passages to adjust pacing.. move to Shuffle Mode, drag your tone from the regions bin to a new track, highlight the section of room tone you need, copy and paste into your VO track..

or.. in Slip Mode, right click and separate the region where the break needs to be, slide it over with the grabber tool... after you go thru the VO track select all the regions and drag it over the room tone track and the gaps will be filled in with room tone.

thats it..

In Logic, drag the room tone from the Media bin, highlight the amount of room tone you need in the region, go to "Snip, cut section between locators", then position the playhead in your VO track where you want to insert the tone and select "Splice, Insert snipped section at Playhead".. There will be a gap created in the VO track and you drag the snipped section of room tone into the gap. .. about 3x more effort than in PTools

Very helpful. I'll give it a try. Thanks.

I was never a big fan of using room tone to simulate pauses .. I'd rather redo the passage of the read where the break needs to be and give it a real, more natural flow.
