As a group, we should step back and consider this question.

Rules are fine, but is following rules the main reason we're here? Is it the best plan to scare off a new member with a valid question to ask because he dared put it in the wrong category?

New poster Steve O' Sullivan asked a perfectly valid question about vocal control. He made the apparently heinous mistake of asking the question in Critique. How awful of him. How dare he? Well, no worries because a regular member was quick to chastise him for his error, and the question was never addressed. The poster, having been scolded, apologized for mis-posting. Apologized? Really. Please, people. Is this the message we want to send out to newcomers? I know I don't.

The follow-up? His question, the scolding, and his apology--all deleted. Again, I ask: Really????

I'm embarrassed we, as a group, responded this way.

First, I don't think Steve was scolded from what I read. He was merely directed to the forum notes on what and how to post in Critique. That kind of constructive advice should probably have come from one of the moderators, D.B., Jeffery, or myself, but a senior member decided to mention if first.

Second, it appears he censored himself saying he had deleted his comments. Likely a bit of overreaction, but most of us haven't seen what he posted so we have no idea what was said, and therefore we're a bit lost. If it was in Chat it's not there now and was not likely removed by a moderator. We have a storage closet for deleted threads.

I don't see evidence of a foul being committed, but I'll check into it. Maybe you'd like to invite Steve to re-post and we'll try this again?

I removed it for the reasons Bruce indicated. It had been mangled with edits and made no sense. I was under the impression he'd re-post it in the critique section.

Update: just reviewed the comment by Bailey. He was completely friendly. Just pointed him to the critique section and then welcomed him to the group, complete with smiley face. There was no, I repeat, NO chastising.

So Bill, is he really offended, or are you just being offended for him?

Bailey was cordial, and I guess I freaked just a bit. I did not want to step on any toes.

DB, thank you for your clarification; I did not mean to cause any consternation.

I am having difficulty separating an increase in energy in my read with an unconscious elevation in pitch overall, which actually gets worse on sentences I am trying to emphasize. I am making progress with this over the last several days, but I was wondering if any sensei here may have some advice on how to quell this annoying behavior?

I can't speak for him since I don't know him.

I'm not offended--takes a lot to do that for me. And I do know the forums need to be readable and not cluttered with misposted items. I'm just making a point that perhaps form doesn't need to be enforced to the point where the member retreats and drops their question. But perhaps I'm reading too much into Steve's decision to drop his question and apologize.

And I will admit to being sensitive to the issue of deleted posts. Maybe too sensitive. But I recall a personal experience on these pages when a member posted a clip in Critique and asked for feedback.

When he received no response after two days, he joked, "Tough room." That was all he wrote. The response that came back from one of the moderators was that he was out of line for questioning anyone responding to his critique request, and that we're all busy working pros and we're doing him a favor to take our time to offer him a response. He received a very clear tongue-lashing. Well, I didn't like it one bit. And it still rubs me very much the wrong way because the lasher was acting as the spokesperson for the board. So I jumped in--and let me say that the original poster looking for the critique wasn't a personal friend I was defending--don't know him anymore than I know our new Steve. I wrote that it was unnecessary to scold the member for such a lightheated question, and I called the scolder on it, saying that it seemed unnecessarily harsh, and I believe I referred to it as "schoolmarmish" (And if I didn't, I should have). And do you know what happened?

My post was deleted.

So if perhaps I'm being a bit over-sensitive on this issue, Jeff, now you have some history to make my position more clear. And though this happened a couple of years ago, it annoys me still. Because I see that the attitude of my-way-or-the-highway still exists when it comes to any posts that dare to challenge the management's way of doing things.

Gosh, maybe Steve would like to post this as a newly-named topic so he can get his question actually addressed. As of now, it seems to be buried in a topic I created that has probably run its course
