Here's a link to four new short ads for the iPhone 5, and while the message and the pictures are zoomy, there's much to learn or re-confirm about today's non-announcery VO style:

Bit affected in parts but that'll be due to over directing. I like 'em!

Top VO tip for 2012 and beyond. People think "announcer" is cool so it's hard to tell them not to sound "too announcery". Creatives, tell your VO people (and it is mainly a guy thing).... "Ok dood, now we don't want you to sound like a complete and utter tw*t!"

The ads are awesome. I might have to try that style and get away from the "movie voice" thing.

I really like um too! The key is diversity surely. If someone is paying you to do the movie guy thing, keep it going. But having the ability to switch it off and do something more natural is bound to open the doors to more work/clients x

Agreed Elisa. Occasionally I still get direction from producers asking me to sound "less voiceovery" and keep it natural. It's all too easy to slip into voiceover mode, when what they require is the bloke next door or man on the street.

I agree with everyone except Idi Amin, he was just SO wrong!

"Philip, we want you to sound like the bloke down the pub"

"Really? You just want me to pick a fight with you?"

Love the spots, and Jeff Daniels sounds great on them, but...

Didi anyone else notice the huge mouth click near the end of the "Physics" spot between the words "general" and "guidelines?"

Woulda' been easy to edit out.

They are only audible to us--nobody else hears them. Really.

I don't doubt this at all, but I'm still surprised that the engineer (definitely falls into the category of someone who would've heard the click) on a national TV spot for Apple, wouldn't have edited that one out, that's all.

Yeah, I heard the mouth click, too, but I suppose Bill is right (no one but us hears them).

And I did like Jeff Daniels' work but...

I mostly loved that there was 'air' (breathing room) in the copy.
Time to absorb. Contemplate. Appreciate.

Ahhhh. Apple.

Hey, we really like (insert celebrity voice name here)'s slow laconic delivery... his laid-back style is just what our product needs.... I want you to get as much of it as possible in 29 seconds.

I noticed the click on guidelines, but only after I noticed the click on the first 'how'. I like the copy and the delivery - it's all a tad smarmy though. Smart and smarmy are easily confused these days. It's a bit nasal and whiny too - that also passes for intelligence, supposedly.

Even for my corporate work, the direction I get 80% of the time (not 79, not 81%) is sound like a peer talking to somebody at work. I'm not to be the voiceoverist. I'm to be the colleague with the answers that just happens to have clear diction and some snazzy recording gear.

And yes, I edit out my mouth clicks..but I keep the breaths.

It's voice acting, baby!
