Then again, there's always the MicPort Pro. $150. |

All these things sound great....but since I already have a great preamp wondering if anyone can recommend a DAC without preamps...maybe they don't exist anymore. Thanks |
The Apogee Duet 2 allows you to bypass the pre. I use it strictly as an interface (and it is really really clean) even though the pre is extremely clean and transparent.
I think $600 is a great price for it, but I held out for a used one that I found for $250. |

Thanks guys, yes I have a micport pro as well, but I don't like to use it unless I'm travelling....not sure if it works without phantom power on.....I think I tried it once and you have to have that on to make line in work...might be wrong.

You guys sure save me a lot of typing!
The RME stuff is top flight, for sure. the ADI-2 will plug directly into the optical audio I/O of a Mac Mini, slick as can be, pretty sweet. Nice thing about that solution is you are immune to audio driver problems since it's not Firewire or USB. If your studio is good enough for you to hear the deficiencies in the Lexicon Omega (impressive), then you need to go to this level to hear a marked improvement. IMHO. I've got several using the Lexicon Alpha after their Echo AF2's starting flaking on Mac OS Lion (thanks, Apple), including Beau Weaver, and he's a picky dude. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

Yes, that's what I plan to do. I'm expecting cables for that to arrive today or tomorrow. |

Thanks George, I think the Lexicon Omega unit is faulty.....there is some hum on the recordings and I have read reviews where a lot of these units were manufactured badly. It has the hum even when I disconnect all the inputs and outputs....I would like to try the Alpha, but now am bit wary of Lexicon.
Echo audiofire sounded good, but the computer I am using to record doesn't have firewire, so back to USB options. thanks _________________ Thomas Bromhead

I'm using the Apogee Duet 2 as an interface with my outboard mic pre. It's nice and clean. I look at the Duet 2 having preamps as a nice backup in case my preamp goes out.
By the way, I'm on a Mac Mini. _________________ John Weeks Voice Overs

My longer optical cables finally arrived, so I just got the ADI-2 connected to the 9632 PCI card.
Man, that was a hassle. I don't know why, but it was.
And I figured there wouldn't be a big difference between running the ADI-2 through the Edirol UA-25 as interface, and running it straight into the 9632. I haven't done any recording yet, but I have been listening.
Well, I was wrong. Wow, this sound is big.
Who knows? Maybe I'll change my mind about getting a solid state recorder.

If you are not recording what are you listening to?
Are saying you hear a difference in quality between the digital Inputs of the Roland and the RME? _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

I was listening to iTunes. First I couldn't get any sound. Then, I did, but everything sounded like it was dropped down an octave. I have a recording of the Bach Goldberg Variations performed by the Canadian Brass; the trumpets sounded like flugelhorns. My own voice is a tenor, and I sounded like a basso profondo (Cardinal Egan's voice would have sounded positively light compared to mine).
Now it's fine. Not that it's better than the Edirol digital throughput, but it certainly sounds BIGGER. |

Sounds to me like you had a classic sample rate mismatch there.
At least you are happy, all that matters. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

Thanks everyone for your tips...in the end I decided to just get the very basic Lexicon Alpha and its almost perfect. The only thing I don't like is that it has one of those tiny headphone sockets instead of a big one. It converts just fine IF you have a nice preamp. Will do me. Thanks George! Thanks everyone else for your suggestions. _________________ Thomas Bromhead

Well, I have been using the Alpha for a month now and for auditions not requiring huge variations in volume, I think its perfect. For videogame auditions I am using compression on my Trident preamp. The recorded sound has a tinge of color on it, unlike the E-MU which I used before which was very flat. I was skeptical at first as to how something only costing $60 could do the job, but I am totally on board now. The only thing I don't like is that the headphone socket is the tiny one....you can get around that by using one of the monitor outputs around the rear. So if you already have a preamp, this is a great choice. _________________ Thomas Bromhead

Another satisfied user to add to my ever growing list of VO's using the Alpha.
Beau Weaver
Chris Fries
Sam Fontana
Ethan Erickson (voice of SouthWest)
If quality is always directly related to price, we'd all be forced to use Neumann mics. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.
