So I just listened to a fascinating Radiolab about Mel Blanc, specifically what happened after his horrific auto accident.
It was new to me, and I'm curious if this story is common knowledge among the folks working in animation today? _________________ Kendra Hoffman

Yup, this is a pretty well known story. It was amazing Mel survived. His energy/voices changed quite a bit after the accident. But his career never slowed down. |

I have read that Alan Reed considered Blanc a bit of a prima donna prior to the accident, but supposedly when he recovered enough to continue as Barney, some of the episodes were recorded at his bedside, still in his full body cast; evidently this changed Reed's attitude toward Blanc. Perhaps it was because he was a supporting player on Blanc's radio show back in 46-47, not sure, but Blanc's recovery was little short of miraculous. _________________ Chris Mezzolesta, Voice Talent

Mel's post-accident lawsuit was responsible for correcting "Dead Man's Curve" (immortalized by the Jan and Dean song of the same name) on Sunset Blvd. over near UCLA.
It was a very dangerous turn that took unfamiliar motorists by surprise, and Mr. Blanc's near-fatal accident had been preceded by many with worse outcomes. And being so close to the college campus, you can imagine the tragedy of it.
Los Angelenos have something else for which to thank Mr. Blanc! _________________ the Amy Snively family of brands for all your branded thing needs.
