For those of you with a desk inside your booth - do you cover part or all of it with something to stop slapback or reflection?
I have a new custom-built wooden desk that fits my booth nicely, but I've noticed a slight sound change. I know Paul Strikwerda has basically a sheepskin on his desk:

I'd like something that I can still put my keyboard on top of. I'm thinking basic felt from the fabric store - but will that be thick enough? A bear pelt with the head attached would be kinda cool.... _________________ Adam

A cut-out piece of a leftover carpet does the trick for me. _________________ Regards,

That thing on Paul's desk looks to me like a flattened-down dog bed. Jacob's carpet idea is a good one. I have a quilted moving blanket stapled to the top of my desk and it works fine. The basic idea is to get some type of thick, absorbent material on top of that reflective surface to suck-up the soundwaves.

Always know where your towel is!
My "narration" position, has a rolled-up towel at the back of the desk... a sort of sausage 8" in diameter and 24" long. The flat part of the desk has one large towel folded in four covering the main surface in front of me.
The point with using towels is that they are infinitely variable and let you play until you're happy. Easily washable and replaceable and as cheap as chips. The added bonus is they they serve a dual purpose (as a towel) if things get a little steamy in the studio. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

What I did to nullify that reflection is move back from the desk when narrating. I have the mic at the desk edge facing me and slightly down, and I don't get reflection. The only thing I have on the desk is a notebook. I do have a towel in the studio for said steamy occasions. |

Hah! I do narrate some steamy stuff sometimes...and if I ever get peckish, I can just soak a corner of the towel in some bacon fat and have it in reserve.
Yah - I was hoping to avoid a towel or carpet, they're not that pretty I was hoping felt would be think enough, but the rolls I've seen in craft stores are pretty thin, I might have to triple or quadruple layer it... _________________ Adam

Felt might be thick enough. but you an always layer it.
Best thing is to get the mic up and away from the desktop, far as possible. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.
