http://voicebunny.com/

I really dislike these attempts to treat our craft like a commodity.

Today I got offered a three year worldwide TV buyout for 700 Euros. The answer is a polite no of course, but I just know that someone out there will do it.

Thankfully there are masses of clients who don't book on price alone, but with websites like this springing up (thanks V123), the pressure on rates is not going to ease.

There's no point to this thread. It's been picked over and over. Just venting my frustration.

Voiceover is the new Tupperware.

Saying no to poorly paid VO work is a bit like pushing your new car off a cliff with your mother-in-law in the passenger seat. There is a short term cost but a long term gain.

I decided to follow Philip's advice around the time that the rabid rabbit appeared on the scene. (Have a minimum session fee and stick to it, and be very aware of the time and effort spent in chasing low-ball jobs). Because of this, I was able to make an early decision to completely ignore them and treat them as something that didn't fit with my business plan. I get frustrated with some aspects of the P2P sites (see other current threads) but I have no frustration with the bunny as I have managed to totally ignore it.

This, for me, is unusual... and I'm actually quite chuffed* about it Smile

* Sorry about the vernacular, but so far it's a three Brit thread so no translation needed.

Point of fact:
The Bunny was created by the same people behind V123.

Point of fact:
Their early marketing used the phrase, "We'll disrupt and expand the voice over industry big time."

Observation:
None of their marketing talked about "improving" the voice over industry.

Point of fact:
A recent VB job posting proudly stated "We are disrupting several industries and you can help!"

Point of fact:
They claim to have "Over 100,000 talents in 50+ languages."

Observation:
That makes me the opposite of chuffed.

Point well taken Doug. I'm only chuffed with myself because I quite happily ignore them. I certainly am not happy with anything that cheapens or commoditises our profession. As for your observations...

Claim: I have at least fifteen clients each paying me healthy five-figure sums annually. I can't tell you about them because of various NDAs.

Observation: That's as believable as a VoiceBunny claim!

Personally, I believe they are full of what my bunny used to leave all over the living-room carpet. It's a variation of "build it and they will come". It's called, "Lie your arse off and maybe it will happen." Some countries have laws against it.

The people behind Voice123 (and, apparently, VoiceBunny) are IT and Marketing gurus. They came with zero experience in voice-over, but saw a huge opportunity for themselves in the masses trying desperately to get into voice-over. See a need, fill a need.

They'll say and do whatever it takes to get people to sign up and do battle with each other, while they sit and rake in the bucks.

100,000 talent x $299 annual fee = bang on the drum all day.

Why should we accept this bit of bombast any more readily than the rest of their marketing screed?

In my opinion, in voiceover as in virtually any business, there will always be low-ball clients, and there will always be low-ball purveyors. If VoiceBunny can gather them up and put them all together in one place, perhaps that will clear the decks of them in other venues.

My guess is, that 100K figure includes not only the premium subscribers, but also the "standard" members who pay no fees (and receive virtually no auditions) and perhaps even all the other people one could dredge up from among the 17,900,000 hits that Google yields from the search term "voiceover."

Obviously the wretched little bunny is old news - I only found him pawing at my inbox today.

Now then, 100,000 talents? Really? Reeeeeeeeeeeeeeally?

That's a nice thought Lee. For what it's worth, one of my clients tried casting through V123 and found the process about as much fun as root canal due to the extreme paucity of real talent.

100,000 v/o's? I STILL can't get my head around that.

It must be true because it's on the interweb!
