not safe for P.E.T.A.

ok - i know some people are not into the whole hunting thing. i get that. if you are one of that type of person, please do not click the link below. no judgement - just fair warning ... there is a recently deceased carbon-based life-form in it.

my youngest, joseph, got his first "solo" deer this morning, on the last day of the season here in illinois. by solo, i mean he wasn't with anyone else ... he tromped off with the rest of us in separate directions in the pre-dawn hours this morning and was the only one to bring home a whitetail.

standing on the farm my grandpa bought in 1940 are: me, joseph & my dad ... along with dinner.

if you agree, click here

That's a whole lot of special right there. Very nice!

To me, the important word was "dinner". One of our other VO-BBers raised the same issue this weekend... she was concerned if I'd be offended by being shown a picture of her child's first hunting success that had just arrived on her phone (she was a proud mother!). As long as it's going to be dinner, is humane, and we're not running short of Bambis... then it's all OK with me (although, admittedly, it's nothing I have any desire to do myself). Sorry Mel, but venison tastes goooood!

I congratulate Joe on his rite of passage. Did he help out in dressing it?

Mel... I don't believe it was Bambi... Bambi had a bigger rack.

When I was 15 or 16 I worked 2 seasons at a Sporting goods store. My job was to haul skins, carcasses, and heads of just about anything that took a bullet or an arrow down to the freezers. The "Bambi" syndrome wears off pretty fast.

yes, he did a fine job. another little tradition, we roasted the tender loins on the fire for lunch.

it's good bonding time, but it's good conservation too. there are an estimated 800,000 deer in illinois alone. a doe matures at 2 - 3 years then typically gives birth to twins (sometimes triplets) each year for about 10 years.

i typed a big long deal about Chronic Wasting Desease, non-existant predator populations, deer/vehicle accidents and more, but it was starting to get political ... so i deleted it.

anyway, it was a nice weekend at the farm, but the 1st without my uncle chuck, so a little sad too.

i am adding one of his favorite sayings to my signature ... he said it to me a lot.
