What has been your favorite gig you've ever done and why? And no copping out and saying the VO that gave you the biggest payday. Smile

I've had some fun ones. My favorites are the ones that challenge me. I did a short story collection once and one of the stories was told first-person by an older woman, recounting a tale of her days as a young prostitute in an old west saloon when she ran across a man who had a card game and an altercation with three other men.

So I had to tell a story where I sounded like an old woman reminiscing about her days in a 19th-century stereotypical saloon twenty years prior.

Another I just finished tonight was a challenge also. It's first-person with 3 different people; each chapter leads off with a name and that character is telling the story for that chapter. And it bounces around in time a LOT, and there's a TON of minor characters walking in and out, and the timeline keeps shifting, so they are different personalities at different points.

But it does involve baseball so that's cool, since I like baseball. Smile

I like the projects that make me stretch my abilities to craft a story.

A six hour gig making a Swiss Colony Christmas commercial.

I only made $200... but I never had to say a word, I enjoyed working with the other actors and crew, and we all got to eat some of the food.

I guess I should share this... old guy in green sweater.

The voice-busting session for Syndicate.
Started off with the guys showing me gameplay video from a Barbie game as a prank (which I fell for) and ended with the director telling me I was the most rugged & vocally-capable female VO he's ever worked with.

Since most of the session was battle chatter, commands, and dying, that was a real compliment.

For me, it's any job where they just "cut me loose" and let me improv and create characters right there on the spot in the booth. That is a blast! Several years ago I did dozens of animated training modules for Staples and the ITT Sheraton chain. 2 to 4 hour sessions twice a month for almost 2 years! most of the time I was doing between 8 and 14 voices per session. That was "Paid fun!"

And recently, doing some large gaming work, in one session I was directed by the guy that wrote one of the characters I was voicing. His kind words to me after the session really touched me. Bringing life to these characters is what it's all about for me.

I guess any gig where everybody walks away happy is a great one...

I guess my favorite was a series of commercials we did for our local Isuzu dealers group. We did a takeoff of the Car Talk radio show called Truck Talk and we got to bring in some of our best local actors to play the callers. Here's a 3-minute demo honed down from at least a dozen spots in case you'd like a sampler:

It's so hard to pick out a favorite because there are so many criteria that can be used to make the determination: quality of the copy, people you get to work with, cool location, unusually large payday, emotional connection with the client's product or service, where it ultimately gets heard/seen.

Given enough time I could probably come up with quite a few favorites from 30+ years of doing this, but one highlight had to be voicing seven or eight characters in an animated Christmas special. The finished product was pretty good but not about to win any Emmy awards. But it was fun to do and the best part was seeing my name in the credits on a show on NBC TV and knowing my parents saw it too.

I had to decide between a freebie I did for my brother-in-law narrating his book of short Western Stories:

... and this one. If you watch it, you'll know why I loved it. I'm a dog guy (duy, big surprise, huh):

Voicing a character for the storyboard for a movie out next month. It was a blast! Never had so much fun on a job. And working with one of the best and nicest directors around is a special bonus. I get to say a few words in the movie too, which was a whole different kind of fun.

So many to choose from over the years. I guess at the moment I'm leaning toward my gig with the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders. Or the full length Merle Haggard special I wrote, produced, and voiced.

ps...+1 on that Bruce segment.

Opening/closing titles and end of part bumpers for a documentary about the Rugby World Cup. Animated Dragon breathing smoke and flames into camera out of which came the captions. I was the roaring, flaming and smoking Dragon.

Live performance; and it WAS a performance. Faffcon ChoccieTown PA. Best fun ever for me, no pay cheque but I had so much fun.

Live Performance2 - Late last year No2 speaker at Oxford University gathering of the great and the good. First speaker was talking about fiscal dullness, he was the main event. I had to follow him and be vaguely interesting and mildy amusing.

When I walked on stage the audience had heard enough so I knew I was a dead man walking. I changed everything and thought "well I'll give them a reason to want to kill". First laugh 10 seconds in. 1 hour later I said thank you and the entire room got up and applauded for what seemed to me like a life time. Best moment ever, brought a lump to my throat and a tear to my eye.

They gave me loads of money for that pile o's*te which I duly handed to the man from Warchild. Little ones should not get their legs blown off by land mines whilst playing with their friends. This man and his team do things to help these little ones ...I talk sh*ite so it seemed appropriate at the time.
