This new thread is referencing This Older Thread, started by Kim B in June of last year.

I know it's been a while since anyone's posted something on this topic, but I figured - why not? It's easier than starting a new thread...

For those non-union folks in states where Costco/Aetna ISN'T offered (say, like - New Hampshire), what sorts of options have you found out there?

Thanks!
-Mike

Please remember, from the rules for this board:

Please don't add a new post to a thread that's over a month old.
The doggone dates are just too easy to miss.
Have a blast scouring the archives here but please do not resurrect ancient threads. Start a new one with a reference to the old one. Grab the URL of the thread you like and put it in your post.

thanks- Deebs

I'm currently paying COBRA from my previous "day job" at the rate of about $1400/month. That's for four people, and my wife has some SERIOUS health issues so I'm grateful to have it.

This year I'm looking at SAG-AFTRA, but not sure about the timing yet. I'm also interested to see what the ACA exchanges do for rates in my state.

And yeah, like Jeff said above unless you have staff your business structure doesn't really affect the prices. I've been told you can look into group plans through your local Chamber of Commerce and so forth, which doesn't seem viable around here but might be worth at least a peek.

Edit: Didn't realize I was responding to an older thread, sorry. Carry on!

The picture is still bleak for those who don't have a group to join. Hopefully you're in a state which embraces the Health Care Exchanges proposed by ObamaCare (Oregon jumped on that band wagon some time ago, but they are not up and running quite yet), but even those are not likely to be super cheap.

Our state program for those who can't get/afford regular insurance is $1,600 a month for the two of us plus heavy deductibles so we would easily spend $24,000 a year. We've just been paying out of pocket and have saved a ton of money, which of course has raced out the door for other important expenses.

How quickly can you turn 65 and get Medicare?

This thread's not that old but in June I posted that my monthly premium was $749. It is now $893. A year from now, I'm sure it will be well over a grand, but by then I'll be little more than half a year away from that Medicare thing of which Mr. Miles speaks.

If you have been without insurance for 6 months and have been turned down by a carrier for some reason or another, the federal government has a program that's pretty straightforward. If I wasn't able to get coverage from Costco, I was going to go this route, in spite of the risk of being uncovered.

We're with an HMO now and we've got decent coverage at a decent premium of about $600 per month for a family of 4.

If you are a U.S. Military veteran, don't rule out getting your health care from the VA. Every honorably discharged veteran is eligible. They have a sliding scale of costs based on service and disability and income. The cost can be anywhere from free to a co-pay structure similar to having private health insurance. Pharmacy might be free or at the most $8 per prescription a month (as long as it's in their formulary), and they send it by mail.

Thanks to everyone for the input - it's greatly appreciated!

I'm finding out that while living in New Hampshire has some great advantages:
No sales or income tax
No traffic lights in our town
etc...

There's also a dearth of insurance options when compared to states like Mass., for example. Smile

After doing some additional rudimentary digging, it looks as though the Lumenos plans by BC/BS may be the best way to go.

...and sorry DB for posting on the old thread - I had forgotten about how raising the dead is a bad thing to do. Smile

Have a great week all!

Mike,

We use the Lumenos plan... it's pretty workable.

Swedish insurance at 600$ per year. Getting it to work is an absolute nightmare, but costs me nothing extra.
