Dear VO-BB'ers-
I come desiring the sum your communal experiences. I know that many voice talent outsource* aspects of their work-proofing, editing, or mastering. Many others do not, and I know some reasons why are things like financial reasons, or simply enjoying the editing, or preferring to keep everything under their eye. What are your reasons?

*Full disclosure for those who don't know me, I am an editor/proofer/virtual assistant.

Right now, it's mostly financial to me. Once I start booking higher $per hour audiobooks, editing is something I would really like to outsource. I don't mind editing the shorter projects.

I feel if I'm not recording or marketing that I am not making money. Off-loading the editing is a huge one for me, but I also have my assistant doing a lot of direct contact email marketing now too.

My assistant is my grown daughter, who brings our grandson over when she comes to work. It works out well. Smile

I punch n roll, so there's no editing. But outsourcing QC is a no-brainer.

Math is Hard, but if I can pay someone $25 pfh to listen to my books and log the errors, that frees up more of my time to get paid $200+ pfh to talk.

They key is to build that fee into your rate on top of what you want to get paid to talk.

Fran, Anthony, and Jeff, thanks for your replies.

Fran, I remember our discussion on that topic, I hope you get them soon!

Anthony, how could I forget your daughter or your ridiculously adorable grandson? (with his 'cool dude' smile?) Laugh

Jeff, yours is the perspective that I'm hoping more people can pick up eventually Wink

It's all about opportunity cost. What gig am I giving up by trying to save money by doing my own grunt work?

Even if you're only doing a $100 pfh stipend audiobook, give up that $25 so you can move on to the next $100 pfh stipend gig while your proofer is doing his/her thing. 2 x$75 hour books nets you more than 1x$100 pfh book.

Couldn't cope if I didn't outsource editing in busy periods. It makes sense on so many levels.

I love to edit so I don't have a problem doing my own but when it comes to busy time I rely on my partner-in-crime. I can count on one hand when I've had to use an editor outside Dandysound. Those times it was completely worth it financially.
