Does anyone here know if the MBox can be used as an external "soundcard" without ProTools?

I doubt it-- everything Digi makes is awfully proprietary.

Did you ask at the DUC?

I'm not 100 percent sure what you're asking, but I can tell you this: On my Macintosh, I can record directly to GarageBand (or any other sound-recording application) through my MBox using the Digi CoreAudio Manager that came free with my Pro Tools LE. No Pro Tools needed.

(Of course, you need to have Pro Tools to get the CoreAudio Manager. But once you have it, you don't need Pro Tools to record through the MBox.)

I want to use the MBox and a mic to do some voice tracking. I'll have to look for that.

Mbox can only be used with a select few 3rd party programs as an input device... (You'll have to check out the digi site for exactly which programs are approved and compatible) It cannot be used as an ouput device without being paired with ProTools.

Some people will tell you that because of the compatibility with Wave Driver and Asio, that in theory you can use your mbox for these purposes, but believe me when I tell you that you can't!! Don't waste any time even trying, I'd suggest that you go and pick up a cheap little M-Audio FastTrack... for less than $100 it'll treat you right!

Hope that helps!

Cheers,

Brian
