Until recently, I would rarely receive a quote request for anything under a couple of minutes. My typical minimum covered anything up to 10 minutes, but have adjusted it for use in some shorter situations.

But I've been seeing more and more online videos that are running as short as 30 seconds, mostly a minute, two, three, etc. And this morning I received a quote request specifically for dry reads of 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 minutes.

Anyone else experience this?

I'm getting a lot of sub two minute "explainer" videos... they usually run around 250 words. It seems to be the fashionable spot-length at the moment. I think attention spans are decreasing!

I think you're right on target with that assessment.
Do you have a rate for 'under 2 minutes'... or do you use a percentage of your (if you have a) minimum?

I still try to work on a minute rate versus a minimum to just open the microphone so most of the shorter times are covered under one fee.

I still wish all buyers would just say I've got $200 or $500 or whatever for a project and let me say yes, no, or negotiate. But then I'm a dreamer.

attention spans are getting shorter by the day. most of the online videos we produce are 1.5 - 2 minutes. :05 sec. radio spots & :10 sec. tv spots are more & more common. i'm with bruce, though, just tell me how much you have in the budget for vo - and i'll tell you if i can do it for that. as if.

Truth is (as I said to the prospect in email), before this morning, I'd rarely received quote requests for under five minutes. So I asked what he was accustomed to paying for his increments of 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 minutes.

That's about the same as asking about budget, no?

Waiting for a reply.

My rate sheet is 0-2, 2-4, 4-6 minutes, etc. 0-2 is my minimum to open the mic and that includes editing. Makes everyone happy.

I usually try to cover things with my minimum session fee... but that has become quite flexible for repeat customers. In other words, my higher minimum session fee covers more than my lower minimum session fee... if you see what I mean Smile

Aye, I see what you mean Bish! I do the same.

I usually don't mention money until a relationship has been established. Then I say "This is what I'm usually paid.* What's in your budget?" If they come close to expectations and say what kind of future work they have in mind for me, then we proceed. If they're cheap and can't see past next week, then I wave buh-bye.

*and I quote a fee reflective of similar work.
