remember the window plug i made? worked great - but the window is east-facing and with only 2 days of 70+ weather the plastic grids in the ansersen windows have started to MELT!
i am reduced to removing the plug & re-installing to record. which is not terrible, but it's probably a 60# unit, and a pain in my butt.
anybody run into this kind of thing before? any suggestions besides tinfoil on the windows to reflect the sun & make it look like i'm cooking meth in my basement? _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

i'm going to ask about that - but they have been in there for 10+ years and only melted when i added the 11" of insulation - i don't want to just ruin another set for no reason. i had a heavy insulated blind there before and had no trouble ... but it's worth a shot.
an awning wouldn't really work as it's a garden-level room - the base of the window sits almost on the ground. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

I know this sounds like more work, but how would it work to mount that plug on wheels that would position the plug over the window as needed? Probably would have to build some sort of rack to put it on and make it the right height, etc, but that might solve the "lifting that $*@" at least temporarily. _________________ Charter Member: Threadjackers Local 420 |

the window is 4' from the floor with a counter top under it - so that's out. speaking of more work - i HAVE considered scrapping this one and building a NEW window plug that opens/closes like a bi-fold door. it would require large double hinges and a lot more planning than i'm used to - and i wouldn't be able to make it as deep - but it might be just crazy enough to work. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

Todd,
I'm not sure of the manufacturer's name, but there's a plastic reflective film just for this purpose that can adhere to the inside of the glass and reflect out the sun and heat. Check your Home Depot's or Lowes. (Or, better yet, call a glass company and get the name of the stuff). I've used it when I was a glazier, and from what I remember, the stuff is pretty darn effective.
The heat may soften the adhesive on the film, but I think it's well worth a try anyway... _________________ "Dammit Jim, I'm a voice actor, not an audio engineer!"

However, it could have been an alien death ray and your window block saved your studio from utter vaporization. But I wouldn't tell the Andersen people that. They probably wouldn't cover it then.

Is it possible to replace the plastic fake muntins with ones made of wood? _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Bruce does have a valid concern regarding the aliens. But, Lee's idea is a great one indeed. But, if they are dual glazed windows, sometimes that strapping is between the two panes. Hopefully, you'll luck out and they are surface mounted and accessible. Even so, put that film on anyway;it'll keep everything a lot cooler when your plug is in! _________________ "Dammit Jim, I'm a voice actor, not an audio engineer!"

Years ago, Anderson used a plastic muntin bar assembly that snapped in and out of the window and was just held in by small pins on the ends that slotted into holes in the window frame. Pella was the only manufacturer I'm aware of that sandwiched the bars between the panes. But that was quite a while ago; for all I know, it could be completely different these days. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

As someone who just had to buy all new windows ($$$$$$$$$) many manufacturers have the inside-the-glass option now. They also offer the shade the same way. But that doesn't help Todd. _________________ 006 member of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Mic. Bonded by sound.
