Artificial intelligence is everywhere and it's here to stay. Go to the same grocery chain a few times and it starts spitting out coupons for like items in which they might be able to interest you. Do something to any machine that's hooked to a computer (brain) and it remembers. Do it twice, it remembers you like or don't like that thing. But if you get something else and THEN get that thing, it remembers that you don't like that thing but you DO like it with a combination of the other thing. Slowly it builds and over time it knows what you're going to do before you do it. The question is, when will artificial intelligence become greater than our own, start doing it FOR you and then you're not needed anymore? And the answer for many jobs is 'soon', or 'already has'.

I do almost all my banking at my bank, through ATM's. That ATM has several options. Get Cash, Make a Deposit, Check Balances, Transfer, etc. The only thing I do is make deposits. So now when I go, I put in my card which accesses two accounts, and one option comes up front and center. 'Make a Deposit' in the account I always make a deposit.

It was funny, because I busted my wife the other day. I had misplaced my wallet, so I asked to borrow her card because I wanted to 'Make a Deposit'. When I put in her card and PIN, one option came up...'Get Cash'! 'The Brain' already knows who you are and what you want. Convenient... or scary?

Rick, we have to make a distinction, though. Artificial Intelligence indicates sentience, which computers don't have.

Welcome to the future, everyone. It's a cynical and scary place.

There are degrees of artificial intelligence, AI. 'Weak' AI, as it's called, merely uses software to problem solve or accomplish 'reasoning' tasks. Which is what I described. Properly written software can accumulate 'knowledge' to make decisions on its own, which is also, in a very basic manner, what I described. I'm not talking about creating a human, just accomplishing a lot of reasoning tasks by having computers scrutinize what we do. Which is exactly what's happening now.

Very interesting that this topic should boil to the top today.

Last night before turning all the lights out, I clicked over to C-SPAN to see if anything interesting was happening. Boy did I get my moeny's worth. JAREN LANIER has written a book titled "Who Owns the Future". He did the bit where the author gives a presentation and then takes question. You may be able to see in via C-SPAN's BOOK-TV on-line. When I tuned in I though" "Oh my. Some homeless guy who slept under the bridge last night wandered into a bookstore and took over the presentation. The longer I listened, the more I realized I was watching a genius at play.

I learned two concepts new to me. Maxwell's Demon. Hyper-trading. After church today I tracked down one of my favorite gurus who confirmed the existence of and the details of hyper-trading.

I don't care what your political views may be, Jaron Lanier will say some things that will have you cheering, and some thangs that will have you shivering.

I'm going to get the book. It's a study on AI on steroids.

I've worked on phone programs that recognize the caller ID, greet the caller by name and then give them their most frequently used applications as the first options. And that was almost 15 years ago!

I have no problem whatsoever with security cameras: I'm not doing anything wrong. As for the frequent shopper key tags we scan at supermarket checkouts, it gets me coupons for products I buy often. But I do not subscribe to *any* Facebook aHobo Tounges and I am extremely guarded about my personal information online. I also believe 'connecting' with or 'liking' the pages of companies and/or brands benefits no one but them. Nothing (the use of Facebook, etc.) is really free.)

To prevent being tracked online, I've learned to close the browser window after a site visit and open a new one for the next site. And I frequently go through my browser cookies and delete ones I don't immediately recognize.

I drank the Google Kool aid long ago....

And I use Google services for much of what I do online.

Google Now tells me how much time I need to get to my flights, my next appointment, and how to avoid traffic on the way. It knows where I am, what I'm doing, and what's next in my schedule. It tells me when I need to leave, what route to take, and how to get there... And who I'm meeting. It knows if I have a lunch meeting, and can even suggest where to go, based on my tastes.

I'm not frightened by what Google knows about me, or what Google suggests to me.... After all, it's not a person, it's an algorithm. And the algorithm makes my life better. And the more I use it, the better it gets.

What, me worry? Wink

I agree with Don. That said, I can't figure the appeal of an aHobo Tounge like Foursquare. It seems to me it's a great way to inform the burglars out there when would be the best time to swing by and ransack my house. Gasp
